Bottom Line

The 105-room Kantary Bay hotel is set in lush tropical gardens near the southern tip of Phuket. The peaceful rooftop pool provides excellent views and has a phone to call for food and drink orders -- there is also a big, main pool with lounge chairs and umbrellas. All rooms are apartments and are pleasant and clean with more than adequate self-catering facilities and balconies. The location can feel a little out of the way, but the reasonable rates for a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel reflect this. Access to five-star facilities in the nearby sister hotel also make it even better value for money.

Oyster Hotel Review

Kantary Bay, Phuket

Scene

Peaceful, secluded hotel with lush tropical gardens

After arriving at the Kantary Bay Hotel guests immediately notice lush tropical gardens overflowing with exotic plants, flowers, and shrubbery. Even the crisp white lobby hall with polished white stone flooring is scattered with various types of potted plants and floral arrangements. All this rich, jungle-like vegetation throughout the grounds contributes to a feeling of seclusion and calmness. It also helps to mask some of the properties less attractive architectural qualities, built in an artless modern style that hasn't aged well in some areas. A break from the typical Thai holiday resort mold and a general ambience of calm tends to attract the slightly older vacationer less interested in the hectic Phuket nightlife and more in a relaxing stay surrounded by lavish flora.

Location

Situated close to the southern tip of Phuket overlooking quiet bay

The Kantary Bay Hotel is located close to the southern tip of Phuket -- the most popular tourist island destination in Thailand. Its position on the south-side of Cape Panwa means there's not a huge amount in the way of nightlife in the area, though the hotel is surrounded by small bars and restaurants looking over a quiet bay. The island's capital is fairly nearby, 10-15 minutes by car, however Phuket Airport is on the far north side of the island and can take an hour by car. The flight from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket is around an hour and 15 minutes.

Standard amenities include Wi-Fi (charged), CD stereos, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Bathrooms include walk-in showers and separate tubs. Larger apartments also feature washing machines and huge terrace areas with swinging chairs and space for outdoor dining.

Features

Two swimming pools, one with rooftop views, and access to five-star facilities

The hotel has two swimming pools: the main one includes a separate child's section while the long, thin rooftop pool has panoramic views over the Andaman Sea -- both provide call-able food and drink services. There is a selection of dining options, from Italian to Thai to seafood, as well as cocktail bar. A sunny fitness room is an unexpected perk for these prices. Since it's part of the same hotel group, guests can also enjoy all the facilities at the Cape Panwa Hotel including a private beach, more swimming pools, and water sports -- a free shuttle bus there runs every 15 minutes.
