22 Hill Hotel

Previously known as the Bjork Hotel, 22 Hill Hotel was reopened in 2015 and is a simple, pleasantly modern place to unwind while in town. 22 Hill is arranged over two floors and is located on the fringes of the downtown area, close enough to walk to some main attractions -- and close to main bus stops -- but far enough from the heart of downtown to escape the noise. The hotel has a relaxed vibe that's created in part by a chic lobby and lounge with comfortable seating around a log fireplace. Tables are adorned with candles for a more romantic setting, and decor is fairly neutral throughout, with all of the hallmarks of Scandinvian minimalism. The restaurant, Potturinn og Pannan, has a large buffet area, booth-style seating, large windows letting in lots of natural light, and a fully licensed bar where guests can enjoy drinks and snacks. Given the relaxed vibe of the hotel, and the fact that children under 12 stay free, it’s no surprise that couples and families are frequent visitors here. 

The property is situated near Laugavegur, the city's main shopping street, and it will take about 10 minutes on foot to reach the main drag. Otherwise, the immediate area isn't exactly charming, with lots of warehouses all around. Even so, the Holt neighborhood is home to many hotels and hostels, and plenty of shops and restaurants are within walking distance (with more popping up every month). The wonderful Halldrimskirkja Cathedral is around 15 minutes away on foot, and the Sun Voyager Sculpture and Shore Walk will take five minutes to reach by car.  The hotel is near two bus stops and the airport bus (Fly Bus) stops at the hotel’s front door. Keflavik Airport is around a 40-minute drive and staff can assist with arranging transfers (for a fee). Free self-parking is available in front of the hotel, but spaces are limited and parking may be difficult at peak times. 

The hotel has 50 rooms, arranged over two floors, and offers a range of sizes, from Standard Singles to Superior options. Decor is similar throughout the rooms, with plain walls, carpeted or light wood-laminate floors, and splashes of color in cushions and accessories. The lack of artwork makes them feel quite plain. Most rooms are small, and include desks with chairs, flat-screen TVs (with international channels), telephones (with free local calls), tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Larger units have dedicated seating areas. Irons and iron boards are available on request, as well as free cribs or infant beds. The surrounding neighborhood is mostly quiet, although some rooms do back on to a parking lot, which can cause a little noise. Bathrooms are similar in style and small, with an abundance of white tiling throughout. Each has a separate shower cubicle and there are no tubs. Counter space is decent in some larger units, but limited in many, and hairdryers are provided. 

The hotel packs in a few features, including the on-site restaurant and bar, and the small, chic lobby lounge area. The restaurant offers a large selection of breakfast items -- included in the nightly rates -- such as meats, cheese, fruit, cereals, breads, yogurts and hard-boiled eggs. The restaurant is also available for lunches and evening meals, and there’s a fully licensed bar where guests can purchase drinks to enjoy here or the cozy lounge, just off the hotel lobby. There’s a single meeting room and a computer terminal as well. Free parking is available on-site, but is limited, and free Wi-Fi is available in all areas.
