Bottom Line

Ca' San Polo is a mid-range hotel in a 15th-century townhouse in one of the narrow streets of Venice's San Polo neighborhood. There are 15 air-conditioned rooms spread over three floors, plus a charming roof terrace. Rooms are typically Venetian and have gorgeous wood beamed ceilings strung with romantic chandeliers. Wi-Fi is spotty, and breakfast is expensive, but there are plenty of bakeries in the area for an early-morning snack. Prices are extremely competitive for a location this close to the tourist sights.

Scene

15th-century townhouse with city views from the rooftop terrace

On a quiet street, the Ca' San Polo is housed in a simple cream-colored townhouse that dates back to the 15th century. There aren't many public spaces in Ca' San Polo, but the breakfast area is pleasant, with exposed beams on the ceilings and huge windows that flood the room with light. The rooftop terrace has lounge chairs and views out over the rooftops of Venice. As with most hotels on the island of Venice, the hotel attracts more tourists than business travelers.

Location

In an old part of San Polo, a 10-minute walk from the Rialto bridge

The hotel is located in the quiet, narrow streets of San Polo -- the oldest district in Venice -- and is a two-minute walk to the San Toma vaporetto (water bus). The beautiful Frari Church, known for its Venetian Renaissance art including some of Titian's works, is a three-minute walk away. Campo San Giacomo -- the oldest church in Venice -- is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, as is the Rialto Bridge -- Venice's most famous bridge -- which dates back to 1591. St Mark's Square takes about 15-minutes to reach on foot.

Rooms

Classically Venetian rooms with long red drapes, chandeliers, and high wood-beamed ceilings

The rooms at the Ca' San Polo have classical Venetian decor, including red and white brocade bedspreads, thick red curtains, antique-style furniture, and Murano glass wall sconces and chandeliers. Some feature wood-beamed ceilings and/or small balconies with partial views of Canal Grande. All rooms have small flat-screen TVs and minibars, and Wi-Fi is free but the connection can be spotty. Guests can open the windows for fresh air and take in the views of the maze-like streets. Bathrooms are small and simple with white tiles, and the bigger ones have bathtubs and bidets.

Features

Rooftop terrace with city views, breakfast (for a fee), and free -- but spotty -- Wi-Fi throughout

Unlike the majority of similarly priced Venetian hotels, Ca' San Polo charges for breakfast (although room rates that include the morning meal are available). The breakfast consists of coffee and continental items (mainly baked goods), but lacks hot items. There's a great rooftop terrace with views over other roofs in Venice. Wi-Fi is free but the connection can be weak in some parts of the property.
