Cons

  • Fee for parking

Bottom Line

This 314-room downtown hotel is housed in a 1926 building that was the original corporate headquarters of Shell Oil Company. But it's not all about historic appeal here -- guests are greeted by the fantastic modern lobby, which features high ceilings, curved suede sofas, soft lighting, and a cool fireplace. Each room is outfitted with premium bedding, thick velvet drapes and flat-screen TVs. Gorgeous bathrooms feature marble and granite, and each has a separate walk-in shower and big soaking tub. There's no spa, but guests can access the 24-hour fitness center or hit up Houston's only rooftop pool and Jacuzzi for some sun and relaxation. The hotel also offers some great perks, including free shoe shines, free daily breakfast, and an evening reception with assorted beers and wines. Bedtime milk and cookies are also served -- a cute and comforting touch.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

Convenient downtown location just 20 minutes away from the nearest airport

Magnolia Hotel is located in downtown Houston across the street from a peaceful church. It's within walking distance of many attractions, including Minute Maid Park, the Houston Ballet, and Verizon Wireless Theater. Local eateries and clothing boutiques are nearby, while the Johnson Space Center and boardwalk are across town.

They say everything's bigger in Texas, and Houston definitely lives up to that. Characterized by steamy summer days and mild winter nights, the thriving metropolis sprawls over a flat landscape punctuated by tall, stately buildings and winding roadways. Major areas include East End, Montrose, Downtown, and the Kirby districts, but shopping, restaurants, and other attractions can be found off most major highways.

As the country's fourth biggest city, Houston is home to several major sports franchises, including the Astros, Rockets, and Texans, as well as the Johnson Space Center, where visitors can hear the infamous line, "Houston, we have a problem" from Apollo 13.

  • 20-minute drive to William P. Hobby Airport
  • 31-minute drive to George Bush Intercontinental Airport
  • 1- to 5-minute walk to dozens of bars and restaurants
  • 8-minute walk to Minute Maid Park
  • 10-minute walk to the Houston Ballet
  • 10-minute walk to Verizon Wireless Theater
  • 14-minute walk to Discovery Green Park
  • 6-minute drive to the Toyota Center
  • 10-minute drive to Buffalo Bayou Park
  • 13-minute drive to Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo
  • 14-minute drive to Gus Wortham Golf Course
  • 15-minute drive to Reliant Stadium
  • 40-minute drive to Johnson Space Center
  • 43-minute drive to Kemah Boardwalk
