Bottom Line

The 94-room HF Fenix Garden, part of a small chain, is a good value in a not-quite-central, but still convenient, location. Overlooking the attractive Eduardo VII Park, the hotel is within walking distance of bustling Avenida da Liberdade (lined by restaurants and shops), as well as several neighborhoods and a large shopping mall. The hotel has very few on-site amenities -- no spa, fitness center, or restaurant -- but it does offer a daily breakfast buffet, as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. The rooms are simple but attractive, with colorful, blown-up photographs and bright curtains and chairs to highlight the otherwise all-white decor. And though the mint-green tiles make the bathrooms seem somewhat dated, they are otherwise modern, in keeping with the rooms. Some rooms have spacious balconies overlooking the park.

HF Fenix Garden

Location

On a busy street overlooking the Eduardo VII Park

This hotel overlooks the attractive Eduardo VII Park. Though it doesn't have the most central location, it is within walking distance of several sights and neighborhoods. The beginning of Avenida da Liberdade is just a short walk away, and an upscale shopping center and a park are within walking distance. Many other sights are easily accessible (and not far away) via public transportation.

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a beautiful, colorful city overlooking the Atlantic. Like Rome and San Francisco, Lisbon is a city built on seven hills; but it has an Athens-like vibe with white-washed, red-roofed buildings, a fishing community, and laid-back people. Though many buildings were destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755, Lisbon still has a rich history (including historic buildings and cobblestone streets).

Originally referred to as the "eighth wonder of the world," Lisbon was a major importer of exotic goods from Europe and Asia. But nowadays, Lisbon can be overlooked due to the popularity of the quaint, seaside beach towns nearby. But those who love the city can tell visitors the many things they miss when skipping over Lisbon; it is a city of iconic historic buildings (such as St. George's Castle), extensive museums, and fabulous shopping -- particularly for gold, silver, and antiques.
