Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Within walking distance of French Quarter attractions and museums
  • Contemporary rooms with great amenities; many have fantastic views
  • Rooftop pool with plush loungers and cabanas
  • Bright fitness center with a wide array of machines
  • Two lively bars, one of them with a great cocktails menu
  • Free car service within a six mile radius

Cons

  • Rooms showing wear; complaints of maintenance issues
  • Fee for Wi-Fi (free in the Living Room)
  • The restaurant is nothing special
  • Fee for valet parking

Bottom Line

The W New Orleans is a hip upper-middle-range hotel located in the Central Business District, within walking distance of both the French Quarter and the Museum District. It offers 423 stylish rooms with dark accent walls, plush beds and great amenities -- including flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Tivoli Audios, and Bliss toiletries -- but they’re showing wear and tear, and bathrooms are in need of an update. The outdoor pool with cabanas; two lively bars; free car service; and well-equipped fitness center are all great features, but overall the hotel is not quite up to par with other W properties.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Scene

Hip and stylish, but a little rough around the edges

The W New Orleans offers the same great amenities as its sister properties -- including the Whatever/Whenever concierge services, free car service, a great gym, and a lively lobby lounge -- but it is not quite up to par with the W brand standards. Rooms, while attractive and well-equipped, are a little tired (especially the bathrooms) and the furniture is showing wear and tear.

All in all, the W New Orleans is a decent alternative to the many business hotel chains found in the Central Business District, with chic decor in a contemporary palette; two lively bars; a small rooftop pool; and a well-equipped fitness center. The lobby is spacious, attractive and always busy, with a lounge area, a popular bar, free Wi-Fi, and lots of natural light.

The restaurant, the wear and tear, and the pesky fee for Wi-Fi are the main letdowns -- plus, rates can be a little high considering the maintenance issues. Still, the location is convenient both for business and leisure travelers, and there are great extras, such as free car service and a free yoga kit (which includes six DVDs, a mat, and a foam block).

 Location

In the Central Business District, within walking distance of French Quarter attractions and the Museum and Warehouse districts

The W New Orleans is located right on the border of the Central Business District and the Warehouse District, across from the Harrah’s Casino and a couple of blocks from The Shops at Canal Place. The French Quarter attractions, including the action along Bourbon Street, are an easy walk away but far enough for nights to be quieter. Streetcars running along Canal Street, St. Charles Street, and Port New Orleans Place can be found within a three-minute walk.

  • 23-minute drive to Louis Armstrong International Airport
  • Across the street to the Warehouse District
  • 10-minute walk to nightlife on Bourbon Street
  • 10-minute walk to the riverfront Woldenberg Park
  • 10-minute walk to shopping and art galleries along Royal Street
  • 11-minute walk to the Museum District
  • 12-minute walk to Jackson Square
  • 14-minute walk to renowned Café du Monde
  • 16-minute walk to the Superdome
  • 19-minute walk to St. Louis Cemetery No.1
  • 22-minute walk, or a 5-minute drive to Congo Square
  • 4-minute drive, or an 11-minute streetcar ride to the Julia Street Cruise Terminal

 Rooms

Stylish and well-equipped, but showing wear and tear

Rooms at the W are stylish and attractive, with dark accent walls, white plantation shutters, large mirrors with thick wood frames leaning against the wall, and black-and-white artwork. They come with tons of amenities, including flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Tivoli Audio systems, well-stocked minibars, and even erotic kits. However, rooms are showing wear and tear, and bathrooms are in need of an update or at least improved maintenance. For stunning city and river views, request a room on a higher floor.

  • W Signature beds with down duvets and 350-thread-count linens
  • Flat-screen TVs with in-room movies and a DVD library
  • Bliss toiletries
  • Well-stocked minibars, a box with snacks, and wine
  • iPod docks
  • Coffeemakers with free Starbucks coffee
  • Tivoli Audio systems
  • JimmyJane erotic kits
  • Fee for Wi-Fi (free in the Living Room)
  • Free bottled water
  • Large work desks with power outlets
  • In-room spa treatments upon request
  • Pet-friendly rooms available

 Pool

A small outdoor rooftop pool with cabanas

The hotel’s outdoor pool is located on the 4th floor, adjacent to the fitness center. It is big enough for a few short laps, but most guests come here to relax in the sun or in one of the poolside cabanas.

  • Padded loungers
  • Three cabanas with ceiling fans and flat-screen TVs
  • Not heated

 Fitness Center

Well-equipped fitness center with natural light and city views

  • Cardio and strength-training equipment with individual TVs
  • Free weights
  • Yoga mats and Pilates balls
  • Free use of towels
  • Free bottled water
  • Free use of Lululemon yoga kits featuring a mat, 6 DVDs and a foam block

 Food

Zoe serves Southern fusion tapas in a stylish space -- but food is nothing special

Zoe serves tapas-sized Southern fusion dishes in a stylish space for breakfast and dinner. Food is a little uninspired, and service is slow most of the time. The bar and lounge opens after lunch and closes after dinner, and offers free coffee in the afternoon.

  • The Living Room Bar, located in the lobby, has a short bar food menu available until late at night.
  • 24-hour room service; kids’ menu available

 Drinks

Two lively bars, one offering small bites for lunch and dinner

  • Whiskey Blue opens for happy hour and is open until the wee hours.
  • The Living Room Bar is open seven days a week, and offers cocktails and a short menu of bar food.

 Services

Free car service, concierges, and pet-friendly policies

  • Fee for Wi-Fi (free in the Living Room)
  • Free car service within a six-mile radius
  • Whatever/Whenever concierges
  • Laundry and dry cleaning services
  • Comprehensive pets program, including treats, plush beds, and dog-walking (for a fee)
  • In-room spa treatments available
  • iPod accessories rental
  • Free use of Lululemon yoga kits
  • Business center in the lobby (for a fee)
  • DVD and CD libraries

It offers 423 stylish rooms with dark accent walls, plush beds and great amenities -- including flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Tivoli Audios, and Bliss toiletries -- but they’re showing wear and tear, and bathrooms are in need of an update.
