Bottom Line

Verandah is a large upper-middle-range all-inclusive with 200 suite-style rooms and a variety of activities for kids, making it one of the island's best resorts for families. The colorful, contemporary resort features four restaurants, two small beaches, three pools, a lovely spa, and a mini-golf course. The vibe is casual and laid-back, though while it offers many amenities, Verandah can feel generic and doesn't exhibit any distinct personality or charm.

Scene

A casual resort full of family-friendly activities, but lacking in a distinct personality

This family-friendly, casual all-inclusive resort is the younger sister of the slightly more upscale St. James's Club nearby. The lobby is bright and airy, featuring light colors and contemporary wicker furniture, but as with the style of the overall resort, it is largely plain and unremarkable. Activities like the mini-golf course and large outdoor playground keep things lively and make this a great option for families, though it is popular with couples and older guests as well. While Verandah maintains the easygoing, relaxed atmosphere of the Caribbean, it tends to feel a bit generic, unfocused, and lacking in a distinct personality.

The resort is spread out over a lush, green, slightly hilly 30-acre property, and staff members are happy to give guests a lift by golf cart (or buggy, as they call it here) to get from one side of the property to the other. There are banana trees growing all around the property, which the staff will pick to use in the restaurant or for a fruit smoothie at the bar.

Location

On the quiet, secluded northeast corner of the island

Map of Verandah Resort & Spa

Verandah is situated on a hilly 30-acre property on a secluded part of the northeast corner of Antigua, on the quieter, less-populated side of the island. It faces onto Dian Bay, a small narrow body of water that offers protection from the open sea, but the beach may see some wind and choppy waters from the Atlantic. It's quiet, private property with not much else around.

The resort borders on a national park that has some nature and hiking trails. From the end of the property, guests can find a path that leads on a short hike up to Devil's Bridge, a unique rock formation in the shape of an arch that was carved by the ocean. The resort is around a 30-minute drive to the airport or the capital city of St. John's.

Rooms

Clean, bright suite-style rooms with sleeper sofa beds

The rooms at Verandah are very light and airy, with vaulted ceilings and wicker furniture, but the decor is rather bland and unmemorable. All rooms are suites which include sitting areas and small kitchenettes with wet bars, microwaves, mini-fridges and coffeemakers. Bathrooms are clean and updated, with new tile. The spacious sitting areas feature a queen sleeper sofa, allowing up to four guests to fit comfortably. Amenities include flat-screen TVs and bathrobes, but no iPod docks, and Wi-Fi is at an extra charge.

The Two-Bedroom Villas include full living rooms and small kitchens with microwaves, toasters, small refrigerators, coffeemakers and two-burner stovetops. Each room and villa has a private deck or patio, some with sweeping ocean views.

Features

Two small beaches, four restaurants, and a lovely spa

There are two white-sand beaches, though both have relatively small beachfront areas for the size of the resort, as the beaches are deep, but not very long. The natural landscape of these beaches includes lots of trees and palms that provide plenty of shade and there are many lounge chairs available. The main beach has a large staircase that leads down to the sand, which is not ideal for less-mobile guests. The funky island-themed Rasta Bar, at the smaller beach, plays reggae music and serves up frozen drinks and snacks throughout the day.

There are four restaurants, the largest being Seabreeze, which serves buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Buccaneer serves casual seafood and Nicole's (not included in the all-inclusive plan) is a fine-dining restaurant with an upscale European menu. The Beach Bar & Grill features classic barbecue items next to the main beach.

The resort features three pools, including a small adult-only pool. The large main pool has a fountain in the center, and is a popular spot for guests to gather, though can sometimes feel crowded. The lovely spa has a sauna and a secluded deck for tranquil, open-air massage treatments. There are other nice touches around the property, like jugs of drinking water on the beach, by the tennis courts, and other outdoor areas. A conference room is also used as a cinema, and shows a different movie each night.

Family

Family-friendly amenities include a mini-golf course and a Kidz Club with a huge outdoor playground

The resort features a great mini-golf course, the only one on the island, which both kids and adults can enjoy. There is a spacious Kidz Club containing a small pool with a fountain designed for children, and a huge outdoor playground. There are many games located around the resort, including ping-pong, pool, shuffleboard, and tennis. Sand toys are available for use on the beaches, where the water is calm and shallow. Water sports available on the main beach include snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boating.
