Bottom Line

The 16-room Puri Sebali is a contemporary upscale resort located in the jungle overlooking the rice fields outside Ubud. It's quite far from the center of town, though the resort runs a free shuttle that takes about 15 minutes. Suites and villas are decorated with a lovely blend of traditional Balinese and rustic-chic styles. All have nice views of the surrounding jungle and rice fields, and villas have beautiful private pools and gardens. The restaurant serves traditional Indonesian fare for all meals, and the lovely outdoor infinity pool is a guest favorite -- as is the spa with semi-open treatment rooms and a whirlpool. For an equally chic alternative closer to town, KaJaNe Mua Private Villa & Mansion has lower rates right near the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

Puri Sebali Resort

Scene

Peaceful jungle setting with gardens and lovely infinity pool

As is common in Ubud, the resort is situated to take advantage of its beautiful jungle setting overlooking the rice fields. Guests check in seated at a wooden desk in the open-air lobby. It's a lovely open space with traditional Balinese art objects on display and a seating group where guests can hang out. The pool is adjacent, and there is beautiful tropical vegetation all around. The only sounds are of nature, and the property as a whole is done in a blend of rustic-contemporary decor and Indonesian accents. The majority of guests here are couples looking for a quiet escape, but some families and groups also stay here. It's worth noting that there are quite a few steps throughout the resort, so guests with mobility issues may want to take precautions.

Location

Secluded property in the rice fields, a 15-minute ride from central Ubud

This resort is located on a ridge overlooking the rice fields outside of Ubud, on one of the shortcuts from Ubud to the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, surrounded mostly by wild jungle. It is a 15-minute shuttle ride from Ubud, though guests who rise early enough to beat the heat have done the one-hour walk through some stunning scenery into town. Still, for most guests it will be too far to regularly make the journey on foot, and there's really nothing in the way of dining, drinking, or shops nearby (though that's part of the draw for many guests here). The picturesque Tegalalang Rice Terraces are a 15-minute drive away, and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and Ubud Palace can be reached in about 20 minutes by car. Ngurah Rai International Airport is an hour and 15 minutes south of the resort.

Rooms

Beautiful rooms with rice field views, villas with private pools and garden terraces

The resort offers 10 two-level suites, five one-bedroom pool villas, and one four-bedroom family pool villa. Regardless of category, though, decor is a handsome blend of traditional Balinese design and rustic-chic details. Expect to see creamy marble floors, solid wood furniture with clean lines, canopy beds, and local artwork. The color palette is soft and warm, done mostly in white and wood tones, and villas have atmospheric pagoda roofs. Amenities include minibars, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and kettles for tea and coffee. Suites have balconies overlooking the rice fields, while one-bedroom units have sliding glass doors that lead to lovely marble terraces and private pools overlooking the rice fields and gardens. Guests can relax on the cushioned lounge chairs or sofa or eat alfresco at the cafe table. Spacious modern bathrooms have rainfall showers and deep soaking tubs plus spacious light granite vanities with trendy vessel sinks. The bathroom in the villa that we visited even had a stylish recessed area that made it feel like the bathroom was outdoors, despite everything being enclosed.

Excellent restaurant, beautiful outdoor pool, spa,and freebies like Ubud shuttle, yoga, and morning walks

Situated out in the country, well away from the real-world trappings of central Ubud, this small property has enough to help guests relax for at least a couple days. The restaurant serves traditional Balinese fare for all meals in an open-air setting with a thatched roof. It overlooks the pool and jungle beyond, and reviews are universally enthusiastic. Breakfast isn't included in most room rates, but plenty of Western and Indonesian options are available and it's well liked. The outdoor infinity pool is small but beautiful, surrounded by a stone pool deck and tropical vegetation. It overlooks the jungle and rice fields, and cushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas invite poolside relaxing. Sebali Spa has two treatment rooms that are semi-open and also overlook the jungle. Traditional Balinese treatments are offered, and there's a whirlpool with jungle views as well. A free shuttle takes guests into Ubud every two hours, and free yoga classes are offered each morning.
