Located outside the city center in a residential area, this budget hotel built in 1983 is showing its age. Interiors have a dated look, and except for the upgraded Business Rooms, most of the 205 guest rooms are in need of refurbishment. Standard in-room amenities are limited to flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and old-fashioned safes, while the Business Rooms have extras like minibars and Senseo coffee machines. Notable downsides are the wet room-style bathrooms with only shower curtains acting as dividers. The buffet breakfast is charged extra, but coffee and tea are free in the lobby. On-site features include a restaurant, bar, and two conference rooms. For a much more stylish yet budget-friendly option, travelers could consider Generator Berlin Mitte, which also has a more central location.
Scene
Dated budget hotel popular with school and tour groups
The Econtel Hotel's bright yellow facade painted with graphics stands out on the corner of a block of nondescript buildings. The lobby area is light-filled thanks to high ceilings and tall windows, but the decor is otherwise uninspiring and bland. Potted plants on either side of the entrance are an attempt to add a bit of life to a dull space, while a few tired-looking burgundy leather sofas provide seating. Dating back to 1983, the hotel has an institutional look and is in need of updating. The property is popular with school groups and bus tours, and can get busy as a result. The hotel also gets a fair share of business travelers during the week.
Location
In a residential area close to a U-Bahn station
The hotel is situated outside of the city center, in a residential area close to the River Spree. It's conveniently located close to several supermarkets, shops, restaurants, and cafes, and the neighborhood is well connected to public transit. There's a bus stop right outside the hotel with direct connections in just 12 minutes to Berlin Tegel Airport, and the closest U-Bahn station is Mierendorfplatz, just a few minutes walk away. it's a bit far from the center, however, and not within walking distance of the main tourist sites or attractions.- Four-minute walk to the River Spree
Rooms
Bright guest rooms with dated decor and wet room-style bathrooms
The guest rooms at ECONTEL HOTEL Berlin Charlottenburg are relatively spacious, with large windows letting in plenty of natural light. Though clean and tidy, they're drab looking, with dated furniture, blue carpeting lining the floors, red curtains at the windows, and walls painted in soft shell-pink hues. The standard in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and old-fashioned manual safes, but there is no air-conditioning, and guests frequently complain that the rooms get hot during the summer months. Drinking water is charged extra. Bathrooms are wet room-style, with only a shower curtain dividing the shower from the rest of the space, which may be why some guests complain of musty smells here. There are wall-mounted soap dispensers, magnifying mirrors, and hairdryers. Located on the top floor, the upper-category Business Rooms feature newer looking furniture, and are equipped with extras like minibars (including snacks) and Senseo coffee machines (Standard Rooms don't have coffee- and tea-making facilities). The bathrooms, however, are the same wet room-style arrangement. There are also Family Rooms available that are fitted with bunk beds, as well as colorfully painted Family Club Rooms decorated with cartoon characters. Note that there have been complaints of some rooms smelling of cigarette smoke.
Features
On-site restaurant, free coffee and tea, breakfast buffet for a fee, and on-site parking
For a budget hotel, the Econtel Hotel has a fair amount of features, though as with the rest of the hotel, they can be dated in appearance and function. The breakfast buffet is charged extra and includes hot and cold dishes like cold cuts, cheese, yogurt, a selection of cereals and breads, as well as bacon and eggs. Lunch and dinner are served from an a la carte menu at the on-site restaurant, and there's also a small bar serving drinks, coffee, and other beverages. Free coffee and tea is available for guests in the lobby throughout the day. For business travelers, there are two conference/event rooms located on-site that are suitable for various functions for up to 50 participants. Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout the entire hotel, but there's no business center. On-site parking is available, though it's an extra fee. There's also a bicycle rental service. Pets are welcome to stay here, but guests should inform the hotel before arrival.
