Hotel Indigo is a boutique-style hotel from the massive InterContinental Hotels Group chain. The trendy design, said to be inspired by the nearby Berlin University of the Arts, makes the upscale hotel feel more luxurious than its moderate price would suggest. It has a central location, close to the Berlin Zoo, restaurants, and shopping, and it's convenient to public transportation. While its 81 rooms are modern, playful, and stylish, some can feel cramped, and those facing the street can get noise. Travelers looking for a similar style, and who would like a pool, might consider the SANA Berlin, which also has a free breakfast.
Scene
Stylish and modern with a punchy design and pleasant courtyard
Like most other Hotel Indigos, this Berlin outpost is highly design-conscious and tapped into the local vibe. The expansive, white-on-white lobby has a smattering of white plastic swivel chairs and wire chairs cushioned in navy and lime-green pillows. The main common area is a pleasant outdoor courtyard with wooden cafe tables and chairs, a few potted plants, and an oversized swing-arm desk lamp acting as a chandelier. Indigo's breakfast room/bar has a similarly stylish atmosphere that’s a bit warmer, with rich herringbone wood floors, white tablecloths, and a lounge with cushy modern club chairs that invite both tourists and business travelers to linger.
Location
Close to the zoo and convenient to shopping, restaurants, and attractions
The hotel sits on a main street with a number of other hotels, including the Waldorf Astoria Berlin, in an area filled with restaurants and cafes. Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s main shopping street, is a 10-minute walk away. It takes a few minutes to walk to the Zoologischer Garten station down the street, where there’s easy access to rail and bus service to other parts of the city. The Zoo Berlin is 10 minutes away on foot. Other nearby attractions include the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which is a 10-minute walk. Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie are about 25 minutes away via public transportation. Berlin Tegel Airport is a short 10- to 15-minute drive, and about 45 minutes away on public transportation.
Rooms
Small rooms with fun, modern, artsy decor and modern amenities
The chic, modern design begins with the rooms' doors, decked out in brass sans-serif room numbers, that open into white-walled, mod guest rooms. White sawhorse desks, wire-legged chairs, and lacquered cabinets are accented by hits of bright orange and lime green. Pop-art murals dominate the wall behind the beds. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, coffeemakers, safes, and alarm clocks with iPod docks. The bathrooms have white-molded vanity sinks, magnifying mirrors, and Aveda toiletries. Walk-in showers have luxurious rainfall showerheads and shimmering tiles that cast a rainbow effect. But Standard and Deluxe Rooms feel somewhat cramped. Executive Rooms are a bit more spacious and have balconies. Rooms that face the street get occasional noise, but those away from the main street are quieter.
