Bottom Line

This spacious mid-range chain hotel offers free parking and Wi-Fi, plus an indoor pool, hot tub, and day spa -- amenities that can come with a much higher price tag in downtown Vancouver. Guest rooms are clean and bright, yet pretty basic, decor-wise, with green carpeting and light wood furniture; some have nice kitchenettes with two-burner stoves. So for travelers with a car – couples, families, and outdoor enthusiasts – this North Vancouver option is a smart choice. It's right off the highway and within easy driving access to area attractions, particularly Grouse (15-minute drive) and Cypress (25-minute drive) Mountains.

Oyster Hotel Review

Big and suburban, with unmemorable interiors and nicely landscaped grounds

Among the largest buildings in North Vancouver, the Holiday Inn has an imposing, six-story facade flanked by leafy trees. The property is beautifully landscaped with brick paths winding around hedges, plus an outdoor fountain and waterfall. The lobby and hallways are decorated in standard franchise hotel style, with pale colors, floral prints, and generic artwork. But the restaurants have some character: The Pantry, with diner-style booths and trinket cabinets, is bright and inviting; Seymour's Pub, with a barn-like ceiling and candlestick light fixtures, draws locals looking for fun and sports on TV. Both restaurants have patios.

Off of major highway in North Vancouver, with easy access to mountains

Located right on Highway One across the harbor and northwest of downtown, the hotel is within a 10- to 20-minute drive of Stanley Park, Gastown, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and the heart of downtown. The beauty of this location is that the mountains are very easy to reach via the highway; Grouse Mountain is about 15 minutes away, and Cypress Mountain is about 25 minutes away. There is a large grocery store a few minutes away, but no other shopping or notable restaurants within easy walking distance. The bus stop, with lines going to various parts of the city, is a few minutes' walk down the road. The drive to the airport is about 30 minutes without traffic, and the drive to Whistler is about an hour and 45 minutes.

Basic and clean; choose north-facing rooms for mountain views

Guest rooms are more or less what one would expect from a Holiday Inn – spacious and clean, but somewhat bland, with standard wood furniture, white bedding, and green carpeting. Still, the beds are comfortable and the pillows soft, and there is free Wi-Fi access, Keurig coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. Move rooms have a small kitchenette with a microwave, small refrigerator, and two-burner stovetop. Bathrooms have marble counters and white shower/tub combos. Some suites have a couch and lounge area. The north-facing rooms have views of the mountains in the distance.

Lovely indoor pool, spa treatments, and two restaurants

Given its location a bit far from the action, it's a good thing this Holiday Inn offers several free amenities – parking, Wi-Fi, fitness center with new equipment, small indoor heated pool, hot tub, and sauna. There is even a day spa offering massages, beauty treatments, and many body treatments with some organic or botanical ingredients. There are two large restaurants: The Pantry, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Churchill’s Lounge for coffee or a drink; and Seymour’s Pub, a fun lunch/dinner sports bar and restaurant. There is also more than 2,000 square feet of meeting space, and a ballroom suited for business conferences or weddings.
