Bottom Line

The seven-room Cornish Arms is a bed-and-breakfast built over a traditional Cornish pub. This cozy, lower-middle-range property is picturesque and friendly, with the caveat that, as a working tavern, it can get busy. The pub serves typical British fare, like fish 'n' chips, and a smattering of Thai dishes. Although set off the beaten track, the property is a good value for guests with cars who are keen on exploring the area. Guest rooms are basic and clean, with coffee/tea facilities and private bathrooms. For budget lodging that includes pools and family-friendly amenities, travelers could try Hendra Holiday Park.

The Cornish Arms

Scene

An authentic Cornish pub with a gallery of regulars, and, as it happens, rooms above

The Cornish Arms is like a movie version of a traditional Cornish pub, with leaded windows and a slight Tudor look to the outside. The building is a former 16th-century coaching inn, and is now a tavern with a gallery of regulars (and their dogs) and a ton of local color. The sign at the door reads, “Please Bang Your Boots” and indeed, the vibe is old-school rustic. The decor is pure pub, with slate floors, wood beams, and a log-burning fireplace; the artwork and accessories include old maps, nautical lanterns, cartoons by and depicting pub regulars, and scads of miniature liquor bottles in long display cases. There are also the obligatory billiards tables and a dart board. The menu is pubby, as well, but the meats and vegetables are locally sourced, and there are several Thai items on the menu. On Sundays, the pub holds a roast lunch. In essence, the Cornish Arms is a pub with rooms, relaxed and homey, and a real chance to mix with the locals for the couples and families who tend to stay here.

Location

In a quiet, traditional village, surrounded by private homes, with easy access to coastal towns

The Cornish Arms is located in the traditional Cornish village of Pendoggett on the North Cornwall coast. The village of Port Isaac, now made famous as the location for the British TV series "Doc Martin," is two-and-a-half miles away. There are no shops, bars, or casinos in the immediate area, which is primarily residential. Guests can wander to town or to the beach via a picturesque coastal path, and drivers have easy access to the local surfing and swimming beaches. St. Kew Golf Course is 10 minutes’ drive away; Crealy Adventure Park and the town of Padstow are around 30 minutes by car. Tintagel Castle, King Arthur's birthplace, is seven-and-a-half miles' drive. The Eden Project, with rainforest vegetation inclosed in biodomes, is 20 miles from the inn.

Rooms

Simple, quaint, individually decorated rooms with modern bathrooms

The seven guest rooms include Double, Twin, and Family Rooms. Each is individually decorated, and all have modern en-suite bathrooms, most with shower stalls, some with shower/tub combos. The decor is cozy and bright, in pastels along with darker blues and greens, homey quilts, and some clever wallpaper. The knotty-pine furnishings include freestanding wardrobes, desks, and bedside tables.  Standard amenities include small flat-screen TVs, free toiletries, and electric kettles for tea and coffee, with shortbread on the side. The downstairs pub is open until one a.m., and the walls are thin, so light sleepers may want to bring earplugs. There's a hypoallergenic room available.
