The 251-room Riu Don Miguel is a mid-range chain hotel in the middle of Playa del Ingles. This modern, adult-only hotel uses colors festively, with a bright pink seating area in the lobby and pink and purple furnishings and decor throughout its three restaurants and bars. The guest rooms are moderately large and also punched up by pops of color. Each room offers a sizable balcony, a mini-fridge, and a flat-screen TV. While the half-board option includes buffet breakfast and dinner in the cost of the room, Wi-Fi incurs an extra charge, except for 90 minutes per day of free access in the lobby.
Scene
An adult-only hotel with distinctive, vibrant decor that draws mainly couples
The brightly colored decor and thoughtful design choices set the Riu Don Miguel apart from a typical mid-range chain hotel. Outside, a blue-tiled pool includes a string of pink lounge chairs sitting in shallow water. A few pink sculptures stand around the pool area, turning what could be a drab patio into a more stimulating experience. The pool deck also houses a small whirlpool and numerous lounge chairs and beach umbrellas, as well as a handful of sunbeds shaded by canopies.
The vibrant accents carry over to the hotel's interior spaces as well. Riu Don Miguel celebrates its no-kids policy in Body’s, one of its bar/restaurants, with bright pink and purple decoration, a large full bar, and images of semi-dressed men and women on the walls. While Body’s has a club-like feel, it’s a full restaurant that offers a la carte dinner. The expansive Divine Lounge bar, off the pool, invokes less corporeal ideas, with large bamboo-filled vases and Buddha sculptures.
Location
In the heart of Playa del Ingles, but too far to walk to the beach
The Riu Don Miguel is in the center of Playa del Ingles, one of the more popular towns in Gran Canaria. There are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. However, the beach is too far to reach by foot (the hotel does provide a free shuttle service). The hotel is located off a busy intersection, so noise can be a problem in street-facing rooms. The airport is roughly a 20-minute drive away.
Rooms
Moderately large, with balconies and colorful accents that make them more appealing than standard chain rooms
The rooms at the Riu Don Miguel are moderately large, with each one having space enough for a small table and chairs, a mini-fridge, and a flat-screen TV. All rooms also include sizable balconies. The wood furnishings are contemporary and fairly plain, but the overall design scheme is livened up by pops of color. The hotel employs a softer version of its common space color scheme in the rooms, which have pastel trims, curtains, and bedding. These touches of color do a lot to elevate the room above the standard chain hotel feel. Bathrooms are simple, with hotel-branded soaps, wall-mounted hairdryers, and shower/tub combos. Wi-Fi access and in-room safes both cost extra, with some guests feeling nickel-and-dimed by these charges.Light sleepers, take note: Noise can be an issue in street-facing rooms. Also, some rooms are quite a walk from the lobby.
Features
More amenities and freebies than expected from a mid-range hotel
The Riu Don Miguel feels a bit more upscale than a typical mid-range chain, as it offers a surprising number of amenities and freebies for a hotel of this category.
The action can usually be found at the expansive pool deck and adjacent Divine Lounge bar, which features nightly entertainment ranging from live music during the week to DJ sets on the weekends. Some guests do warn that the weeknight entertainment tends to get repetitive, though, with the same singer performing nearly every evening.
When it comes to dining, guests can book a half-board option that includes free buffet breakfasts and dinners. Though the buffets include an extensive amount of options, the food gets mixed reviews from guests. The gym offers reasonably modern equipment in excellent condition, but the number of machines is fairly limited, as the space is on the small side. There’s also a tiny boutique on the premises that sells clothing and accessories, but the Riu Don Miguel’s central location
means there is shopping within walking distance as well. While the property is not near the beach, there is a free shuttle provided by the
hotel.
