Complaints of repetitive food
The Jardin Dorado is a mid-range hotel in a quiet area near a golf course and a 10-minute drive from the beach. It has lovely manicured grounds and features a large pool. The restaurant and poolside snack bar offer outdoor seating, and while breakfast is varied and included in all rates, lunch and dinner tend to be repetitive. The hotel’s 114 rooms are housed in stand-alone buildings with furnished patios and living areas. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi and safes come at an extra charge, and some bathrooms could use a refresh. Free shuttles run to two beaches and the hotel has a playground and game area for kids. Travelers looking to stay closer to the beach can consider the Ifa Faro Hotel, although rates are higher and it's not kid friendly.
Scene
Quiet hotel with lovely grounds and a great pool with a jetted area
Suites Hotel Jardin Dorado draws many families and couples, but the vibe here is quiet and relaxing. Rooms are housed in lovely single-story stand-alone buildings with white facades, terra-cotta tile roofs, and arched windows with wooden frames and shutters. They’re all arranged in three concentric circles set around a spacious pool deck, and well-kept lawns full of flowers, cacti, and towering palm trees offer a serene backdrop. The central pool deck features dozens of padded loungers, as well as several shaded areas with palm trees and umbrellas. The restaurant, decorated in a cheerful white, orange and brown color scheme and featuring cute arched windows and doors, offers outdoor seating, as does the poolside snack bar. Buddhist-inspired details -- including thee small Buddhas in the lobby and a large painting in the dining room -- lend the property an updated feel, and large windows make common spaces sunny and welcoming. However, other common areas are more basic and dated, especially the living room off the lobby, which features 70s-style furniture, plain brown carpeting, and a few more contemporary (if generic) couches in white and red. This is family-friendly property, with a number of seasonal features for kids. Still, plenty of couples pass through as well.
Location
Slightly out-of-the-way location adjacent to a golf course, a 10-minute drive to the beach
The hotel is located in a somewhat isolated area adjacent to a golf course. There is a tennis club across the street from the property, and a couple of restaurants and supermarkets within a five-minute walk, but little else. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles beaches, and shuttle service to both is available free of charge a few times a day. Yumbo Mall -- which has a slightly seedy reputation, but is popular nonetheless -- and the promenade in Playa del Ingles offer plenty of nightlife and dining options, but those looking for something a little quieter can drive to Maspalomas and the Meloneras area, which are home to several restaurants and a few mellow bars. The airport is a 25-minute drive away, and the hotel offers shuttle service for a fee. There is also free outdoor parking on-site.
Rooms
Spacious, generic Junior Suites with terraces and living areas
The hotel has 114 Junior Suites housed in cute stand-alone buildings set in lovely gardens with grass lawns, flowers, and cacti. Decor is modern, but generic, with simple gray couches, red accent chairs, and dark run-of-the-mill wooden furniture. Gray tile floors are a tad dated, but abstract paintings in yellow and red hues add some color. Some have small kitchenettes with sinks, cooktops, microwaves, and mini-fridges, but most only have a mini-fridge that can be stocked for a fee. All have tiled decks complete with a table, four chairs, and an umbrella, and living rooms featuring sofa beds and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms are as simple as the main bodies of the rooms -- and in fact look a bit cheap -- with gray and white tiled surfaces, and flimsy countertops. We also spotted some grime and wear around baseboards in bathrooms during our visit.
Features
Pool, outdoor hydrotherapy area, restaurant, gym, and seasonal kids’ club
The main focus of the property is its spacious pool deck, complete with a large family pool, a shallower kiddy section, and plenty of padded loungers and umbrellas. A separate area in the pool features several high-pressure jets for back and neck massages, and a small whirlpool. This area is heated in the winter. Guests are offered free access to a sauna, and massages are available for a fee on request. The restaurant serves a decent buffet spread and features outdoor seating by the pool, but some guests find the food in the evening a little repetitive. Breakfast is included in all rates, and different meal plans are available, including half board and all-inclusive. The snack bar also has a few tables on the pool deck, and offers a few fast food items, as well as drinks, candy, and ice cream. Guests get discounted rates at the adjacent golf course and the tennis club across the street, but those looking to get a quick workout also have a small fitness center on-site, complete with a handful of cardio and strength-training machines. The hotel also features a seasonal kids’ club with indoor and outdoor activities and games, and a playground with swings and a slide. Wi-Fi is only free in the hotel's lobby and comes at a fee everywhere else.
