Poised like a pair of off-kilter monoliths, the tilting towers that make up this four-pearl property sit across from one of the world’s largest trade show and convention centers. Opened in 2009, the hotel immediately achieved “landmark” status; however, the public areas inside -- including multiple restaurants and bars -- aren’t nearly so adventurous in their style. Ditto for the 398 contemporary but comparatively bland guest rooms, all of which features minibars, plasma TVs and free Wi-Fi. The isolated location, northwest of the city center, is another downside (at least for those who want to squeeze in some sightseeing). If you prefer an upscale business-oriented alternative right in the thick of things, consider its sister property -- the NH Collection Milano President -- instead.

The buildings, moreover, are encased in black glass-ceramics and randomly punctuated by windows of assorted size. The helter-skelter end result is arresting -- though some might unkindly say it looks like the work of a distracted child. By contrast, the dark lobby seems sleek but uninspired. It’s not particularly comfortable either. For instance, the black tufted seating is oh-so contemporary but mostly backless and hence doesn’t invite lounging. The business travelers who typical occupy them are too busy to linger long anyway -- especially during exhibitions when the FieraMilano complex, that's just across the way, is buzzing.
