Scene

Ornate, historic hotel

The Grand Royale was commissioned by Edward VII in the 1850s and was built by the same architect who built The Ritz Hotel in Mayfair. Much of the woodwork and paintings in the hotel lounge and bars are originals, while some survive from later renovations. The lobby has an opulent feel, with its grand staircase and impressive art. There is also a lounge with big leather couches and lots of dark wood.

Location

In West London, steps from Hyde Park

The Grand Royale is located in Bayswater Village, a small area of tourist shops, restaurants, and apartments that separate Paddington and Notting Hill. The hotel is located just across the street from Hyde Park with easy walking access to Kensington Palace, the Royal Albert Hall, the Natural History and Science museums, as well as Kensington High Street. Just around the corner are Queensway Station (Central Line) and Bayswater Station (Circle + District Lines) that have access to many parts of the city including Paddington Station (for the Heathrow Express train) and Victoria Station (with the Gatwick Express train).

Rooms

Small with a few nice extras

The rooms at the Grand Royale Hotel are former private apartments which have been converted, so there are some small irregularities especially with small room sizes. With that said, the hotel has done a good job at outfitting the rooms with modern decor and appliances such as flat-screen TVs, tech-friendly USB and HDMI inputs, as well as free Wi-Fi, drinks, snacks, and toiletries.

Features

Impressive public spaces and function rooms

The breakfast and dining room is a large, well-adorned area with high ceilings and beautiful crown moldings. The function room next door is equally as impressive, ideal for medium-sized business meetings and presentations. The theater bar on the ground floor was a former Edwardian theater that has been converted into a showpiece drinking establishment, complete with satellite sports coverage. The lobby also, with its leather sofas and free computer and printer access, is available to guests 24-hours a day.
