Bottom Line

The 157-room NH Alcala has a wonderful location in upscale Salamanca neighborhood. It’s half a block from beautiful Retiro Park and the Metro, and is near attractions, dining, and great shopping. It has small, sparsely decorated rooms that are starting to show their age, but most come equipped with espresso machines, flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and heated towel racks. There’s no fitness center, the restaurant is nothing special, and there’s a pesky fee for in-room Wi-Fi (though the hotel offers 30 minutes of free Internet per stay), so it’s probably worth comparing prices with other hotels in the area before booking.

Oyster Hotel Review

Half a block from beautiful Retiro Park and within walking distance of other major attractions

Map of NH Alcala

The NH Alcala has a wonderful location in upscale Salamanca neighborhood. It is half a block from beautiful Retiro Park and public transportation, and within walking distance of major attractions, such as Puerta de Alcala, Cibeles, El Pardo Museum. Great shopping along Serrano and Goya streets is just a few minutes from the hotel, and there are several solid restaurants in the area. However, those looking to spend a night out will probably find taxis and public transportation more convenient than walking to nightlife hot spots from the hotel.

Salamanca is the only area in Madrid with a grid system, which makes it easier to navigate than other more central areas in the old city. There are few sights in the heart of the neighborhood aside from high-end boutiques and expensive restaurants, but many major attractions can be reached on foot.

  • 14-minute drive or 48-minute Metro ride to Madrid-Barajas Airport
  • Steps to restaurants, bars, shopping, and nightlife

  • 20-minute walk to Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
  • 11-minute Metro ride to Puerta del Sol
  • 15-minute Metro ride to Plaza Mayor
  • 15-minute Metro ride to Plaza de Oriente, home to the Royal Palace, the Royal Theater, and Sabatini Gardens

  • 21-minute Metro ride to La Latina, a nightlife hotspot
  • 20-minute Metro ride to Plaza de Castilla, the financial district
  • 23-minute bus ride to Templo de Debod Park, with great views and an original Egyptian temple
