Situated in the Latin Quarter, the Select Hotel is a 65-room, upper-middle-range boutique hotel with simple and sophisticated modern decor. Tucked on a quiet side street directly across from the Sorbonne University, the Select Hotel is slightly set away from the main tourist areas but still in walking distance to a plethora of eateries, shops, public transportation, and city attractions -- including Luxembourg Gardens and the Panthéon, just five minute’s walk from the hotel. The decor is simple and modern with a zen-like central atrium. Rooms are compact but stylish with wood beam ceilings, AC, and free Wi-Fi. Guests find the rooms small but comfortable, though some complain about quirky bathroom layouts. There are few extra property features other than a tiny lobby bar and a breakfast room that serves a daily buffet for an extra fee, which guests find overpriced. Guests looking for a different style hotel in the same price range can try the nearby Hotel des Grands Hommes, which has similar features and ornate decor.
Scene
Sophisticated, modern decor with zen-like central atrium
Located in a simple but elegant white building with window boxes and molded detailing, the Select Hotel is as charming as the quintessential Paris street it sits on. Inside, guests are welcomed with a light-filled atrium-style lobby with glass ceilings and a modern zen-like atmosphere. Tiers of planters hold cacti and other greenery, while open wooden steps reveal the rock garden underneath them. Off the atrium, a tiled floor leads to the gray-marble reception desk. Two modern red puffer chairs and a glossy black panther statue offer an eclectic modern vibe, while two lounge rooms with hardwood floors, tan leather armchairs, and chic contemporary art give more spaces to relax. The hotel’s proximity to the Sorbonne as well as Paris attractions make it a hub for university guests and tourists alike.
Location
In the Latin Quarter across from the Sorbonne and in easy walking distance to shops, eateries, transport, and Paris hotspots
Situated on a charming and quiet walking street with a few shops and eateries, the Select Hotel is located in the 5th Arrondissement’s Latin Quarter on the Left Bank, literally a few steps away from the Sorbonne university. Just outside of the city’s main tourist area, the hotel is close to plenty -- it’s a five minute walk to the Panthéon and to Luxembourg Gardens. About 10 minutes on foot will take guests to the banks of La Seine, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Saint-Germain boulevard. Guests who enjoy walking can get to several other sights on foot in under a half hour. The hotel is a four-minute walk from the metro, which guests can also use to get to most Paris attractions in under a half hour.
Rooms
Compact rooms with tasteful, modern decor, wood beam ceilings, and AC
Rooms at the Select Hotel are modern and tastefully decorated with wood beam ceilings, light-wood furniture, unobtrusive striped carpeting, white walls, and a pop of modern art. Though small, these rooms feature smart design details that make extremely good use of the space, so they feel slightly larger than the typically tiny Parisian digs. In the Standard Room, a long, thin wood desk with a streamlined Z-shaped wood chair sits along one side of the room, while another has a wall-mounted flatscreen TV and a built-in luggage rack that extends down from the wall. All rooms have air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, but there is no in-room coffee or tea service.
Bathrooms are similarly compact and some guests -- particularly those not used to European-style bathrooms -- find them quirky and awkward. There’s a built-in sink, a separate toilet stall (which may or may not be located across the room from the shower and sink), and a roomy but curtain-less shower/tub. The hand-held shower wand offers great water pressure, but can take some getting used to, and many guests find they manage to get most of the bathroom wet when using it. Some bathrooms surprisingly feature their own TV, and all come stocked with a hairdryer and individual Savon Doux toiletries.
Guests suggest avoiding ground-floor rooms, as they have no view and can be noisier. Front-facing rooms can have spectacular street or roof top views but can be slightly noisier, so light sleepers may want to choose an atrium-facing room.
Features
Breakfast room and small lobby bar, but few other property features
The Select Hotel has few extra property features, but it does offer a buffet breakfast for an extra fee. While the breakfast room is located in a windowless basement area, the room is surprisingly stylish with vaulted stone walls, sconce lighting, and wooden cafe tables. Breakfast includes the typical buffet selection, such as croissants, sausage, scrambled eggs, cold cereal, and drinks, but guests find that it’s only okay given the cost. The hotel also has a small three-seat bar off the lobby.
The hotel has a 24-hour reception desk and will help guests make reservations or rent cars. Childcare or airport shuttle service are available on demand. Room service and laundry service is also available.
