Bottom Line

The Bay Club Hotel & Marina is a low-rise three-pearl property set on Shelter Island overlooking North San Diego Bay. The on-site restaurant has lovely views over the water, as do the pleasant rooms, which have at least partial marina or bay views. However, bathrooms are showing signs of wear. Rates are perfectly reasonable for the area, though the nearby Kona Kai Resort offers more amenities and is only a touch more expensive.

Bay Club Hotel & Marina

Scene

Low-rise, waterfront hotel with relaxed ambience and private marina

The Bay Club Hotel & Marina occupies a long, low-rise property that first opened in 1985. Although architecturally it feels dated, a full renovation completed in 2014 has spruced up the decor thoroughly throughout. The interiors are well maintained, with contemporary furnishings, fresh flowers, and a sleek, modern reception desk, although some areas leading to the marina appear scruffy. The ambience is quiet and conservative, attracting the slightly older crowd (consisting primarily of weekend vacationers or visitors anchoring their boats or yachts on-site or nearby), while the layout provides plenty of vantage point from which to enjoy views over the water.

Location

On Shelter Island, overlooking North San Diego Bay

The hotel is located on Shelter Island, a long peninsula attached to La Playa district overlooking North San Diego Bay. On the north side of the property is the marina, while the south bay-facing side is home to the grassy Shoreline Park, which stretches down the length of the island and provides a pleasant walkway for a stroll or a jog. San Diego International is a seven-minute drive away, while Old Town San Diego is about 15 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Air-conditioned rooms with at least partial bay or marina views, but dated bathrooms

The hotel has 105 air-conditioned rooms, all of which have sliding doors leading to balconies with at least partial views of the bay or the marina. Rooms are spacious and clean, with painted bamboo and rattan furnishings, though some bathrooms are showing signs of age. The blue and white color palette contributes to a beachy feel. Standard amenities include free Wi-Fi, single-brew coffeemakers, and 42-inch flat-screen TVs with free premium cable channels (namely HBO and Disney Channel), while room service is available until late evening.

Features

San Diego Bay views from restaurant, underground parking

The hotel's Quarterdeck Restaurant & Bar offers craft beers, hearty meals, and outdoor seating with views over San Diego Bay, though the maritime-themed decor gives it a dated look. Guests arriving by boat can rent out slips at the hotel's marina that come with free electricity, water, and Wi-Fi. The outdoor terrace also overlooks the marina and has a heated swimming pool and a hot tub, and although the hotel has a gym, it is cramped and in need of an upgrade. The Bay Club has the only underground parking on the island, and airport transfers are available (both for a fee).
