Hilton Colombo Residences

Set in a 33-story building, this upscale hotel has kitchen-equipped suites that draw a mix of business travelers and families both on short- and long-term stays. Interiors are contemporary, if chain-like, outfitted in a largely neutral-tone design that's attractive albeit characterless. However, some interesting ceiling fixtures and historic photographs on the walls add pleasant touches. Unfortunately, some rooms are worn and tired, and show signs of lack of maintenance, while others are sleek and have lovely city views. Some area construction can be heard from rooms, but the hotel is largely quiet. The atmosphere is somewhat business-like, though an outdoor lap pool and adjacent kiddy pool appeal to families. 

Conveniently located in central Colombo, the hotel is surrounded by restaurants and shops, and is within a 10-minute walk of Gangaramaya Park's lake, a popular spot for strolls or swan-boating. Well-known attractions such as Gangaramaya Temple and Viharamahadevi Park are within a 15-minute walk, while Pettah Market, the National Museum of Natural History, and Galle Face Beach are a five- to 10-minute drive. It takes around 45-minute by car to reach Bandaranaike International Airport, depending on the traffic. The hotel can organize airport transfers.

A mix of standard hotel rooms and kitchen-equipped suites are available at the Hilton Colombo Residences. They're spread across 33 floors, either overlooking the city, harbor, or Indian Ocean. Similar to common areas, rooms have a contemporary, albeit chain-like, feel with neutral-tone decor, polished surfaces, and few decorations. Although, some units have older-looking furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows, wall murals of trees and birds, and vintage photographs of Sri Lanka add some welcome character. Unfortunately, some wear is evident and guests have complained of issues such as spotty Wi-Fi (fee).

Standard amenities consist of air-conditioning, black-out curtains, work desks with built-in multimedia hubs, flat-screen TVs with international channels, electronic safes, tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibars, and ironing facilities. Bathrooms have rainfall showers, plus separate tubs in some, as well as quality toiletries, hairdryers, bathrobes, and slippers. Meanwhile, the one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites have full kitchens with stovetops and ovens, and living and dining areas. Microwaves are available on request for a fee.

Although the hotel lacks a full spa, the Hilton Colombo Residences has an array of leisure and business features. Outside is a well-sized lap pool surrounded by wicker loungers and chairs, umbrellas, and a kiddy pool. An indoor wellness area has a whirlpool, sauna, and modern, but small, gym. Squash and tennis courts are also available. The all-day FLOW restaurant serves international cuisines, including Sri Lankan, Chinese, and Western. Five open kitchens and three private dining rooms are located here. An adjacent play are keeps children entertained with a TV and toys. Also open throughout the day is Basico Bar Lounge, which offers a range of beverages and light bites such as salads and sandwiches. It has an appealing al fresco dining area with umbrellas. Union Ballroom can accommodate up to 850 guests, and there is a conference space for up to 75 guests. Parking is free but Wi-Fi requires a fee.
