Cons

- Street noise can be a problem at night
- Fitness center is cramped and in a dark basement area
Bottom Line
The 100-room Hotel Breakwater's highlight is its location -- on Ocean Drive, across the street from the most popular area of the beach (however, proximity to Ocean Drive's restaurants and bars can mean noisy nights). The hotel takes up two adjacent towers, one of which is in the former Edison Hotel building. Rooms all feature handsome, modern yet minimal decor -- crisp white bedding with avocado-green throws, sepia-toned photographs, dark patterned carpets, and streamlined furniture. The rooftop lounge (where a Calvin Klein underwear ad was shot) is a popular nighttime spot, and the pool (though small) is sleek, and has views of the ocean.

Location
On Ocean Drive in the heart of South Beach
Hotel Breakwater is located on Ocean Drive, across the street from Lummus Park, the liveliest area on the beach. Bikini babes and muscle-bound dudes play beach volleyball, and merchants sell T-shirts, coconuts, and cheap jewelry near the boardwalk. An additional contingent of seniors and families also take in the Art Deco architectural sights.
Quaint, neon-lit South Beach (or "SoBe") might be the sexiest beach town in America, with modeling agencies flanking a broad topless beach. People watching is the draw, especially in Ocean Drive's historic Art Deco District, which is packed with outdoor bars, cafes, flashy cars, Rollerbladers, rainbow flags, and plenty of skimpy-bikini-clad bodies. Chic clubs with discerning bouncers draw the fashion-industry elite, the occasional celebrity, and plenty of 20-somethings ready to party.
