On Isla Verde Beach, minutes from the airport
The El San Juan is located directly on Isla Verde beach, known for its great snorkeling and kite surfing. There's not much to see in the surrounding area, though, and it's $20 cab ride to Old San Juan. Dining options in the immediate neighborhood are pricey and tend to be less-than-stellar.
Isla Verde feels somewhat similar to neighboring Condado, with oceanfront luxury hotels overlooking several wonderful white-sand beaches. However, the dining and shopping scenes are less impressive here. Tourists come here for two main reasons: the wonderful beaches bordering the neighborhood on the north, and the short drive to the airport, located a couple of minutes east by car. Isla Verde Avenue, the main thoroughfare in the area, is lined with self-contained hotels overlooking the sand.
The vibe at the 382-room El San Juan Hotel & Casino is that of a fun, self-contained, relaxed party. The property features a lively lobby, a sprawling free-form pool with swim-up bar, and a location right on the clean, white-sand Isla Verde Beach. Rooms are stylish and beach-y, with white bedding and furniture, light wood, bright, tropical accents, and modern touches such as clear lamps and chairs. The bathrooms are modern, too, but aren't exactly spotless or spacious. Just make sure you're happy staying put: There's not much to do nearby, and Old San Juan is at least a $20 cab ride away.
