Bottom Line
The 20-room Hotel Bucintoro is a unique property in Venice, with elegant decor inspired by ancient sailboats. It’s located on the eastern side of the docks, removed from the crowds but within walking distance to major attractions such as Piazza San Marco. Most rooms are small, but all feature gorgeous views of the lagoon and the city (you can even see the Campanile), as well as classy decor with wood panels and a subtle maritime theme, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and marble bathrooms. There’s not much in the way of amenities, just a business center, a bar, and a cozy breakfast room, and rates can be steep. But the quiet locale, the beautiful rooms, and the views make it a wonderful pick.

Location
On the eastern side of the docks, a short walk from Piazza San Marco
The Bucintoro is located right on the water, on the eastern side of the docks. Those who want to be in the thick of the action will probably find this location a bit out of the way, but it is actually a pretty convenient spot -- the Arsenale vaporetto (or water bus) stop, where the airport shuttles stop, is just a couple of minutes away, and Piazza San Marco is an easy walk away along the lagoon. There are restaurants, bars and attractions within a few blocks, but the hotel is removed from the crowds. No cars are allowed in Venice, but you can take water buses virtually everywhere.
- 20-minute water taxi ride from Venice Marco Polo Airport
- 9-minute walk to the Bridge of Sighs
- 10-minute walk to Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square)
- 20-minute walk to Rialto Bridge, the oldest bridge in Venice
- 32-minute walk to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection
- 32-minute walk to Punta della Dogana, home to 15th-century architecture

Winter in Venice: What to do in Venice during the Off-Season
In the summertime, Venice belongs to tourists — 18 million tourists to be exact. Crowds clog the (barely) three square miles of this wondrous city, vastly outnumbering the roughly 270,000 Italians that call La Serenissima home. Literally meaning “the most serene,” this nickname is often replaced by another, less attractive moniker: Italian Disneyland. Though summer…
