River Surfing: The Latest Craze Among Locals and Vacationers in Canada

It may not be Malibu, but land-locked surfers in Canada have found some white caps in an unlikely place — rivers. And so now river surfing is all the rage in Calgary these days (no joke). So grab your board and head across the border for some water play. (Just bring your wet suit, because these rivers will be chilly! And we’re not joking about that either…)

The pros at the Alberta River Surfing Association gave us tips on the top spots to ride the river waves in Canada. Check them out after the jump >>

Green Tongue: The Green Tongue is a two to three-foot wave just off the canoe meadows campground on the Kananaskis river. It’s not big, so it’s a good spot for beginners.

Santa Clause: Santa Clause is the Green Tongue’s bigger brother. This wave is situated directly under the Kananaskis visitor center, and is a 10-minute walk upstream from it’s little bro, so you can head that direction once you’ve mastered Green Tongue.

Kananaskis: The Kananaskis River has several other play spots between the Widow Maker and the end of the race course. Upstream from Santa Clause is Point Break, which is popular among those who are a tad daring.

Keho Lake: This isn’t river surfing, but it is surfing in Alberta. Keho Lake, just north of Lethridge, gets winds that are strong enough to create four to six-food wind swell.
