Bottom Line

The 65-room BCN Urban Gran Ronda is a mid-range option with a convenient location in the Eixample. Guests can walk to most city-center destinations, and Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas are just 10 minutes away on foot. Metro and bus stations are also nearby. Simple, modern rooms offer flat-screen TVs, minibars, and kettles for tea and coffee. Some have small balconies overlooking the street, though others face the hotel's interior courtyard. A breakfast buffet with hot-and-cold items is available for a fee, but otherwise guests have to dine outside of the hotel (which isn't a problem given the wealth of nearby options). Bikes can be rented on-site. Travelers who enjoy wine might consider the nearby wine-themed Hotel Praktik Vinoteca instead, where there's more personality and rates are similar.

Scene

Reasonably priced, generically modern hotel that's a fine base for tourists

This hotel's best feature is its location in the Eixample district, close to major attractions of the city. It serves well as a base for tourists or business travelers who are looking for a well-located, reasonably priced place to sleep and shower. There's not much remarkable about the hotel, but it does have an interior terrace covered in Astroturf with a sofa and arm chairs, plus a couple of tables and chairs shaded by an umbrella. Guests can hang out here to get fresh air, and there's another sofa grouping in the lobby where guests can gather and read the free newspapers. Most guests here are couples, but all sorts of travelers are seen here, including groups, families, businesspeople, and individuals. In any case, most are out and about in the city during their stay her.

Location

Great Eixample setting, a 10-minute walk from Plaza Catalunya and near metro and bus stops

This hotel is located in the southern part of the Eixample district in Barcelona, about a 10-minute walk from Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas. It's surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops, and there are several metro stations, plus a bus station, nearby for getting to sights farther afield. The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) is just a six-minute walk from the hotel, while major shopping along Passeig de Gracia is around 15 minutes away on foot. The Picasso Museum is a 20- to 25-minute walk from the hotel or by public transportation. Expect the trip to Barcelona-El Prat Airport to take about 20 minutes by car, or 40 minutes by public transportation.

Rooms

Modern, simple rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi; some with balconies

Rooms here are modern and simple, with wood floors, golden-hued textiles, dramatic leather-detail headboards, and clean-lined contemporary wooden furniture. White walls lack any sort of decoration, and the minimalist style tends to look spartan in some of the smaller, lower-category rooms. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, minibars, kettles for tea and coffee, and safes. Simple bathrooms are modern and attractively tiled in gray and white. They come with pedestal sinks, hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries. Glass stall showers are tiny, but some rooms have shower/tub combos. Economy Rooms face the hotel's interior courtyard and don't get fresh air. Some rooms have little balconies with views of the street. Family Rooms are available with an extra bed, but they're tight on space. The walls between rooms are not well-soundproofed, so noises drift in from hallways and outside.

Features

Breakfast buffet, business corner, free Wi-Fi, and bike rentals

This hotel doesn't offer much in the way of features. A breakfast buffet (fee) is served daily in a windowless breakfast room, with selections that include meats, cheeses, cereals, fruits, juices, and breads, as well as eggs and bacon. A business corner in the lobby has a computer and printer for guests to use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Bikes can be rented on-site.
