Bottom Line

The 40-room Hotel Catalunya is a budget property with a great central location in the Barri Gotic, close to Las Ramblas and Plaza Catalunya. It's an ideal spot for tourists wanting to walk to all of Barcelona's sights, and is more modern than many city-center hotels in this category. Rooms are simple, clean, and mostly contemporary, with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and small flat-screen TVs. Wi-Fi is also included in room rates. A TV room with vending machines, two computers, and a microwave is the only common area. Guests looking for a few more frills could check out the nearby Hotel Curious, which has an on-site bar and provides free breakfast.

Scene

Simple, modern budget hotel that draws a range of guests

This hotel is located in a century-old building that has been converted into a hotel with a simple, modern look. Like the rest of the property, the lobby is straightforward, with just the front desk and a rack of brochures in a long, narrow space. A couple of chairs give guests somewhere to sit if they need to wait, but it's not a space that's made for any sort of socializing. An adjacent room with a TV, chairs, business desk, vending machines, and a microwave is the only common area, but the main draw of this hotel is its excellent location right in the heart of Barcelona, so guests generally don't spend much time hanging out at the hotel. Guests include all sorts of travelers, from couples to families and even business guests, who want to be in the center of the action.

Location

Right in Barri Gotic, a two-minute walk to Las Ramblas and Plaza Catalunya

When it comes to Barcelona locations, it's hard to beat Hotel Catalunya. Situated in the Barri Gotic, on Calle Santa Ana between Las Ramblas and Portal de l'Angel, the hotel is the definition of central. It's surrounded by all manner of shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes and there are two shopping centers nearby as well, including a massive El Corte Ingles department store. Las Ramblas, the city's iconic pedestrian thoroughfare, are only two minutes away on foot, and Plaza Catalunya is only one minute farther. More shopping is available along Passeig de Gracia, a five-minute walk away. The street is also home to two of Gaudi's famous houses, Casa Battlo (10 minutes on foot) and La Pedrera (a 15-minute walk). The Catalunya Metro station is at Plaza Catalunya, making trips around the city easy. It takes 15 minutes to reach Barceloneta, on the sea, and 20 minutes to reach La Sagrada Familia. Barcelona–El Prat Airport is 30 to 45 minutes away by car or public transportation.

Rooms

Straightforward, clean rooms with mini-fridges, small TVs, and air-conditioning

Rooms are simple but clean, with wood laminate or tile floors, honey-colored furniture with clean lines, and purple drapes, pillows, and bed runners. The look is more modern than many budget hotels in this central area of Barcelona, and it's completed by a sharp brown accent wall that has a damask stripe running down the center. Otherwise, there's little in the way of decor, and the understated style looks fresh. Amenities include air-conditioning, mini-fridges, safes, free Wi-Fi, and 22-inch flat-screen TVs. Beds can be quite firm, and some additional pillows would be welcome. Bathrooms are small, but clean and contemporary, with dark tile and white marble vanities plus up-to-date hairdryers, shower/tub combos, basic toiletries, and bidets. Small balconies provide views of the neighboring buildings or the street, but keep in mind that while traffic noise is not an issue, people milling about on the street below are audible.

Features

TV room with a business desk plus free Wi-Fi, but little else

The hotel doesn't offer much in the way of features. Just off the lobby is a room with upholstered seating and a TV where guests can hang out. A business desk provides two computers and a printer for guests to use, and vending machines dispense cold drinks and hot coffee. There's also a microwave. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and the front desk is staffed 24 hours a day. They can provide luggage storage.
