Holiday Inn Berlin City-West is a solid, 336-room business hotel close to Tegel Airport and Siemens corporate offices and far from downtown Berlin. For corporate travelers, the hotel is adequate, with a 24-hour business center and 18 configurable meeting spaces. The pool, spa, and two-room fitness center are generic but functional with pleasant features rarely found in a mid-range hotel in Berlin. Guest rooms are standard fare: spacious and bright but showing some wear and tear. Guests who aren’t bound to the Tegel location might consider something more central, such as the Adina Apartment Hotel Berlin Checkpoint Charlie, in Berlin Mitte. It also has a pool and fitness center, but its rooms are more up-to-date and include kitchens or kitchenettes, and the Wi-Fi is free (which isn't the case here).
Scene
Large corporate hotel with tired decor and furnishings due for an update
In an unremarkable high-rise, the Holiday Inn Berlin City-West feels tired and disjointed. From the sagging velvet loveseats and leather couches in the lobby to the slightly worn and unmodish bright blue carpet in the hallways, the public areas here cry out to be updated. As a convention hotel, the spaces are large. A huge skylight runs the length of the room above the lobby bar, and the breakfast room is expansive, with outdated metal and plastic chairs and black tables that can’t help but show wear. Given its location far from tourist sights and close to the airport, the hotel caters almost exclusively to corporate travelers. It also does brisk one-night business with airline passengers arriving late or departing early. Leisure travelers needn’t consider this hotel at all.
Location
In Siemensstadt, a quiet suburb near Tegel Airport, home to the Siemens corporate offices
The Holiday Inn Berlin City-West is located on a quiet street in Siemensstadt, a suburb of the Spandau district, located south of Tegel Airport. There’s little within walking distance -- just a few local restaurants and stores -- but the city center can be easily reached via subway, which is a quick walk away from the hotel. This out-of-the-way location allows for quiet nights and lots of green areas to stroll or jog. There are no tourist attractions nearby, but it’s a good location for those who need a hotel close to the airport, to Siemens or Nokia offices, or to the Berlin ExpoCenter City trade fair center, which is a short drive away.- Seven-minute drive to Tegel Airport
Rooms
Reasonably sized but uninspired rooms have aging furniture but some nice touches.
Rooms at the Holiday Inn Berlin City-West are reasonably sized and uniform, but uninspired, with gray carpet, crisp white bedding, and a splash of color in the bed’s platform. Aging light-wood furniture includes headboards, nightstands, and cabinets that hold flat-screen TVs with cable. Each room has a glass work desk paired with a leather office chair on casters. Rooms come with coffee- and tea-making facilities and minibars, which may be more or less stocked, depending on the room. Heat and AC is adjustable in each room. Blackout shades keep morning sun out, and a small programmable safe protects valuables. Nice touches include turndown service, daily newspapers delivered to the door, and pillow menus. Reasonably sized bathrooms are all white tile with chrome fixtures and toiletries. Rooms have shower/tub combos, and suites come with separate soaking tubs.
Features
Indoor pool, spa with sauna, good restaurant, large bar, extensive meeting space, and paid Wi-Fi
The Holiday Inn Berlin City-West has some amenities rare in a mid-range property, such as an 18-by-33-foot infinity pool that's heated and indoors. Another remarkable feature is the hotel's spa, which holds a sauna and steam room, and massage and spa treatments are available. Just across the hall, the two-room fitness center has a rowing machine, elliptical machine, treadmill, stair stepper, stationary bike, and an exercise station with stretch straps. Given the hotel’s remote location, it’s particularly nice that it has a decent on-site restaurant, Intermezzo, serving Italian food. The spacious lobby lounge under a giant skylight has comfortable if aging couches and a piano. The hotel has over 16,000 square feet of meeting space, including one room that accommodates 700. The business center, which is open 24 hours, could use an update. Bike rentals, airport transportation, and parking are all available for a fee. Oddly for a business-oriented hotel, Wi-Fi isn’t free.
