Bottom Line

The Hotel Mediterraneo Park is a modern, sleek upscale property with 200 rooms -- it shares facilities with the mid-range Hotel Mediterraneo next door. Many rooms have balconies that overlook mountains and greenery. It's a five-minute walk to the beach at the Bay of Roses. Both hotels share a spa, and a fitness center, plus three pools, including one for children. A downside is the long lines at the buffet, and rooms can be a bit noisy at both properties. Guest rooms are spacious with contemporary furniture and free Wi-Fi. Outdoor activities include mini-golf, table tennis, and cycling with rented bikes. Travelers seeking a smaller, less-congested hotel might want to consider Vistabella resort.

Hotel Mediterraneo Park and Hotel Mediterraneo

Scene

Two hotels near the beach with shared resort facilities

The Hotel Mediterraneo Park and Hotel Mediterraneo offer two price points with shared use of resort facilities. Both hotels are modern and bright with functional contemporary decor in grand airy spaces. The hotels are housed in off-white, masonry buildings with balconies set against mountains and amid gardens. The pool area is the resort's calling card. The freeform shape is surrounded by stone with crisp blue-mesh loungers. The resort  has many gardens with neatly edged beds and plants of a tropical variety. The main dining room for both properties has leather chairs in cream, tables covered in linens, and windows that look toward the mountains. But with its tile floor and plain columns the overall look is bland, resembling a corporate dining room. The bar offers lilac-colored banquette seating, along with a few counter seats. The outdoor pool bar has a fleet of wicker chairs and wooden tables under a pergola. Bustling during high season with tourists of all ages, the hotel tends to draw multi-generational families from Europe.

Location

In a nature park-like setting, a five minute walk to the beach on the Bay of Roses

This dual-property resort on the Costa Brava is a five-minute walk to the beach. Reaching town requires a 20-minute walk. It's a 13-minute walk to the historic Citadel of Roses, but otherwise a car is recommended. The Costa Brava Bus (Sarfa) originating in Barcelona, makes stops along the coast, from Roses to Cadaques. To reach the popular and chaotic Aqua Brava Water Park, it's a seven-minute drive. The Port of Roses is a 10-minute drive. Cala Montjoi is a 21-minute drive. It takes 27 minutes to drive to the Dali Theater and Museum in Figueres. The Cap de Creus National Park is 40 minutes away by car. The Catalonian mountains of Montgri Massif are a 45-minute drive. The Medes Islands require a 50-minute car and boat trip. Banyoles Lake is a 50-minute drive. It takes 73 minutes by car to reach the gardens of Santa Clothilde. The Girona-Costa Brava Airport is a 50-minute drive, and Barcelona El-Prat Airport is two hours and 15 minutes by car.

Rooms

Efficient and plain or sleek and contemporary, depending on the hotel

The 200 rooms at these two Costa Brava hotels are efficiently designed and practically decorated, but the sparse decor reads as "plain" in the lower-priced Hotel Mediterraneo and "sleek" at the Hotel Mediterraneo Park. Both hotels use dark wood for headboards, trim, and closets, but the Hotel Mediterraneo's wood is of less-expensive quality. Rooms at both hotels have views that include the mountains, pool, and gardens, often from balconies furnished with woven furniture. Windows and balconies are covered with sheers and black-out curtains. The rooms at both properties are in tones of beige, brown, and cream with bleached-wood floors, but there are pops of color in the worn but bright bed spreads in the Hotel Mediterraneo. Both hotels offer free Wi-Fi and well-placed outlets in their rooms, along with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, safes, and flat-screen TVs. The bathrooms at the Hotel Mediterraneo Park are slightly bigger than at its mid-range sibling, but both hotels have bathrooms with gray-tile floors, bidets, and stone counters with square porcelain sinks. The tub/shower combos have glass shields and rainfall and wand fittings at the four-pearl property. Baths at the Hotel Mediterraneo lack  wand fittings in the showers and have curtains. Both hotels provide Aqua-brand toiletries.

Features

A range of outdoor activities and indoor amusements

The Hotel Mediterraneo Park and the Hotel Mediterraneo share resort-style features with both indoor and outdoor activities, treatments, and amusements. There is also a casual restaurant and a main, formal dining room that serves buffet-style meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is a poolside bar serving an array of cocktails and light fare. The lobby bar serves light fare and drinks, and has an espresso machine.

The grounds have three pools: one for guests 18 and older, another for children, and a third, indoor pool. Inside, there's a game room and spa with sauna and steam rooms and a whirlpool. Live entertainment is offered during the high season. Table tennis and chess on a large board with giant pieces are on the ground. Mini-golf and petanque is offered, and there are bikes for rent.
