Bottom Line

The 263-room Hotel Roma is a mid-range property popular with travel groups, in a convenient location for the Lisbon Portela Airport, which is a 10-minute drive away. Spacious rooms have mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi but some pick up train noise and dated furnishings can include tube-style TVs. There are two simple restaurants on-site, one serves a breakfast buffet at a reasonable rate. Guests might want to compare rates with Olissippo Saldanha, an upscale hotel in a quiet neighborhood that has modern rooms and spacious bathrooms.

Hotel Roma

Scene

11-story hotel popular with travel groups, families, and couples

Hotel Roma is a mid-range property located in an 11-story building on the end of a row of buildings on a busy street. Large white letters mounted on blue balconies spell out the hotel’s name. Inside, the spacious, bright lobby has a classic, dated feel with marble floors and wood-paneled walls. There’s a long front desk and seating areas with black and orange couches and chairs. Both the restaurants at the hotel have a banquet hall look with patterned carpeting, wooden-and-fabric chairs, and recessed ceilings, and one restaurant has the extra touch of white linens. There’s also a small, circular bar where guests, a mix of families, couples, and big groups of travelers, can order drinks and sit on clusters of black and white chairs.

Location

Near railway and a 10-minute drive from airport

Hotel Roma is located on the Avenida de Roma, one of Lisbon’s main arteries. It’s only a 10-minute cab ride or drive from the Lisbon Portela Airport. There are several casual restaurants nearby, but not a lot of tourist destinations. It’s less than a five-minute walk to a metro station, and it’s within a 35-minute commute on public transportation to Prac do Comercio as well as the Bairro Alto, a lively tourist destination with restaurants and nightlife. St. George's Castle can be reached in under a 45-minute train ride. Guests with a car can reach the city center in about 20 minutes.

Rooms

Spacious, dated rooms with mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi

Rooms at the Hotel Roma are classic, but dated with parquet wooden floors, beige floor-length curtains, and striped, thin bedspreads. Twin beds are pushed together to make a double. Some rooms get noise from the neighboring train rail. Basic, matching wooden bedroom sets include desks, bureaus, and headboards with nightstands. Rooms have mini-fridges, TVs (flat-screen or tube-style), and free Wi-Fi. Basic bathrooms with shower/tub combos are in need of a renovation -- one tiled bathroom we looked at had an unfortunate pink and green color scheme. Larger rooms are available with living room areas and unfurnished balconies.

Two restaurants, a bar, and a souvenir shop

The hotel has two simple restaurants on-site, including one that serves a breakfast buffet at a reasonable rate. Both resemble banquet rooms, with little decor to speak of. There’s also a bar at the hotel, a souvenir shop selling coffee mugs and keychains, and an Internet corner with two computers. Wi-Fi is available for free throughout the property. The hotel has meeting rooms and an auditorium for private events. Private parking is available for a fee.
