Bottom Line

The Outrigger Maui Eldorado, an older but well-maintained mid-range property alongside Kaanapali's golf course, has large individually owned condo rentals that can make a good base for touring the area. Units vary by owner, but each has a private lanai and a full kitchen. There's no dining on-site, though many options exist nearby, and it's just a short drive to the center of Lahaina. The beach is about a five-minute walk from the Outrigger, and once there, guests can use the hotel's cabana, which includes bathrooms, a sundeck, and a kitchen. The rates are lower at the Outrigger than for rentals right on the beach, but be aware of the fees that can add up, especially for guests who opt for housekeeping.

Scene

Condos on the golf course

Easily mistaken for an apartment complex, the Maui Eldorado's low buildings are nestled in a quiet area surrounded by fairways. Built in 1969, the condos were connected by sunny walkways and outdoor staircases (there are no elevators). Inside the main building's lobby, wicker furniture, rattan fans, and wood-paneled walls invoke a simple yet sophisticated Hawaiian atmosphere.

Location

Between the beach and the golf course

Outrigger Maui Eldorado is conveniently located right off Honoapiilani highway. It's adjacent to the Fairway Shops and surrounded by Kaanapali Golf Course's fairways,  a 10-minute drive to the coastal community of Lahaina. More shopping and some great dining options are nearby at Whalers Village, and the closest beach (with the hotel's cabana) is a five-minute walk. The lively, historic village of Lahaina is about 10 minutes away by car, with lots of shopping and dining, along with some of Maui's best nightlife.

Rooms

Condos with full kitchens and washer/dryers

A relaxed garden setting with views of the golf course and mountains form the backdrop for the condos, which range in size from large studios to 1,700-square-foot two-bedroom suites. Decor and furnishings vary, some more dated than others, but most are well-maintained and come with neutral carpets, tile, and rattan furniture. All the condos have full kitchens with modern appliances in a broad variety of styles, with differing countertops and cabinetry. A washer/dryer is included next to the bathrooms with large vanities and walk-in showers. Private lanais and patios come with tables and outdoor furniture.

Features

Golf course discount, three plunge pools, beach access with facilities and shuttle

Though not directly on the beach, there is access via a walking path that leads to the hotel's beach cabana with a sundeck, kitchen, and bathrooms. A free golf cart shuttle operates between the beach and the condos for those who don't want to make the five-minute trek. The cabana is for homeowners and guests of the resort only, and has limited daytime hours. This stretch of beach is generally quieter than the one to the south, separated by Black Rock -- a historic landmark sacred to the Hawaiians. On-site, there are three small pools surrounded by relaxing sundecks with barbecue grills and shuffleboard. For slightly more serious sporting, Outrigger Maui Eldorado guests can stroll onto the surrounding Kaanapali Golf Course and receive special discounts.
