Bottom Line

Glengarry Castle Hotel offers mid-range lodgings set in a traditional 19th-century country house on the banks of Loch Oich. Rooms are pleasant, if a little dowdy, with well-maintained bathrooms; some feature views over the loch. Breakfast is a highlight and there are also plenty of cozy spots to relax in front of an open fire in the evening. While the hotel can feel a little old-fashioned in places, the setting is hard to beat -- though check out the Bunchrew House Hotel for a similar waterfront option with a little more magic.

Scene

Traditional 19th-century Highland's country house with ancient castle ruins

Scene Glengarry Castle Hotel

A private driveway weaves through lush, wooded grounds to arrive at the imposing -- and rather dour -- 19th-century building that houses the Glengarry Castle Hotel. While those expecting a castle with battlements and soaring turrets might be disappointed, the site is also the historical home of the Invergarry Castle ruin, which was once a genuine ancient fortress. Stepping inside, the vibe is very much in the traditional country house vein, with plenty of wood paneling, carved wooden furnishings, and gilt-framed painting depicting local landscapes. Wall-mounted stag heads and splashes of tartan add to the Highland ambience, while patterned carpets and floral drapery inject a slightly dowdy feel that is more like to appeal to the older guest (though there are no ground-floor bedrooms or elevator).

Location

Picturesque loch-side setting an hours' drive from Inverness

The hotel is set in 60 acres of woodlands and overlooking beautiful Loch Oich, situated between Loch Ness and Loch Lochy. Just off the A82 and A87 highways means easy road access from the city of Inverness, about an hour away, while the southern end of legendary Loch Ness is just 12 minutes away by car. The town of Fort William is also 40 minutes' drive away and a popular base for exploring Ben Nevis mountain.

Rooms

Many rooms feature loch views and some have four-poster beds.

Rooms Glengarry Castle Hotel

Decor in the hotel's 26 rooms is very traditional, with antique-style furnishings, patterned carpets, and matching floral bedspreads and curtains. While certain rooms from all levels have loch views, upgraded rooms tend to have larger windows; several feature carved wood, four-poster, or half-tester beds. All rooms also have free Wi-Fi, tea/coffee facilities, and flat-screen TVs, while well-maintained bathrooms all have showers and tubs (combos in most, and separate tubs in larger rooms). Guest reports suggest that some mattresses could do with being replaced.

Features

Free cooked breakfast and cozy library overlooking the loch

Features Glengarry Castle Hotel

An excellent cooked-to-order breakfast is included in the rate and served in the bright and rather elegant restaurant, which also serves a light lunch and set four-course menu for dinner. A library with a log fire and lovely views over the loch also provides a cozy spot to unwind with a drink, and there's also a lounge with plenty of comfy seating, but no dedicated bar on-site. Free parking and Wi-Fi are also available, though there's no spa or fitness center.
