Bottom Line

Victoria Hotel is a budget option right in Singapore's city center. There's little on-site save for a hair salon, but the hotel is close to public transportation and there are plenty of shopping and dining options -- including a couple of complexes with eclectic food courts -- right outside the hotel. The Standard Rooms are small and general renovations are needed throughout the hotel -- stained carpets and moldy bathroom tiles are not uncommon sights. The nearby Hotel 81-Bugis is equally slim on amenities, but has more contemporary rooms at similar rates.

Victoria Hotel

Scene

Budget hotel with modern lobby and faux-antique furnitures

From the outside, the Victoria Hotel looks like an average budget tower with a foreign exchange bureau on the ground floor and a salon. Inside the small marble-floored lobby, reproduction period furniture and copies of oil paintings seem out of place under the bright economy bulb lighting. Guests tend to be budget travelers and the hotel is a good bet for those who want cheap digs right in the city center, and don't need a lot of extra amenities.

Location

In the city center, on busy Victoria Street

The Victoria Hotel is in the center of Singapore, within walking distance of most of the city's main attractions. The historic Raffles Hotel, St. Andrew's Cathedral, and the Singapore Art Museum are all within a few minutes' walk away. There are also plenty of dining options in the area, and the nearby Bras Basah Complex and Bugis Junction Shopping Center both have food courts with a variety of local vendors. There are public transportation options right outside on Victoria Street and business travelers can get to most destinations in the Central Business District in less than 10 minutes by car. It's a 20-minute drive to Changi International Airport, or at least 45 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Small rooms with eclectic decor and tiny TVs

All 89 rooms feature a mishmash of white Victorian-style furniture and more contemporary decor, with white and pink walls. Standard Rooms are on the small side and have twin or double beds, work desks, and tiny flat-screen TVs. Other amenities include free bottled water, electronic safes, mini-fridges, and kettles, but no coffeemakers. Some rooms have tiled floors while others are carpeted, and visible carpet stains are common. Bathrooms are plain and closet-like, and have either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos with handheld showerheads.

Hair salon, Internet corner, free Wi-Fi, and dining nearby

The entrance to the Victoria Hotel is flanked by two noteworthy conveniences: a money changer, and a 7- Eleven. There's also an adjacent restaurant unaffiliated with the hotel, but dining options are so plentiful in the neighborhood the only thing guests might truly miss here is a simple breakfast. For those in need of a trim or styling, Glamour Hair Boutique is adjacent to the lobby. There's also a "business center" near the front desk, which consists of a pair of tablets on stands. Free Wi-Fi is included throughout the hotel, but may not be reliable in all rooms.
