Scene
Historic hotel with lots of character
The lobby has historic details such as cotto floors, a beautiful white groin and rib vaulted ceiling, antique portraits, and baroque mirrors. It is a welcoming space though the sofa and chair fabrics feel a bit tired. Off the back of the lobby, a large red brick terrace is framed with decorative wrought iron balustrades and has chairs, tables, and umbrellas. It is used for breakfast and has spectacular views of the rolling hills and sky. The manor's original kitchen has been preserved and guests can take cooking classes in it. The atmosphere overall is peaceful, with couples and families using the hotel as a base for exploring this famous wine region.
Location
A village in Chianti close to vineyards and shopping
Located an hour from Florence and 45 minutes from Siena and San Gimignano, the hotel makes a good base camp for exploring vineyards, ancient churches, castles, medieval villages, and monasteries. Fashionistas will appreciate being 40 minutes from the Prada outlet and 50 minutes from The Mall, a luxury outlet with brands such as Gucci, La Perla, Ferragamo, Valentino, Ermenegildo Zegna, Bottega Veneta, and Loro Piana.
Rooms
Serviceable, clean rooms with historic charm
There are several levels of rooms and while the furnishings vary, all rooms have a traditional look. Some rooms have original cotto floors and wooden beams on the ceiling. Many have rich rugs, Murano glass chandeliers, and antiques. The bedspreads have classic patterns that may have once looked luxurious, but now they look a touch worn. All rooms are comfortably furnished with writing tables, luggage stand, large wardrobes, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs. Higher-level rooms are much more spacious, some have panoramic views, and a few have kitchenettes with tables and chairs.
Features
Cooking classes in a historic kitchen, scenic balcony, and lovely indoor pool
Classes in authentic "chiantigiane-florentine" cuisine are given in the original manor house kitchen. Classes can be one evening or a series of three evenings. At the first class of the series, guests learn how to cook home-made pasta and sauces; the second day is meat entrees with fresh vegetables; the third day, desserts. The on-site wellness center offers face and body treatments enhanced with local wine, grapes, and olive oil. Private tours to the outlet malls are easily arranged. There is an indoor pool and hot tub in the atmospheric cellar, beneath a vaulted brick ceiling. A scenic balcony is a lovely place to enjoy the free morning breakfast.
