Bottom Line

The Hotel Austria is a mid-range, 46-room property awash in Old Viennese charm, tucked away on a quiet, cobblestone cul-de-sac in central Vienna. The location is superb, with most of the city center's main attractions within walking distance, and plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Although
the decor might look old-fashioned, the rooms are clean and comfortable, but not all are air-conditioned, and the toilets for Economy Rooms are in the hallway outside the rooms. Rates are OK for the
location, but guests who prefer a more modern hotel might want to check out the Adagio
Vienna City for about the same price.

Scene

Charming Old Vienna style hotel, or dated and old-fashioned -- depending on one's taste

The mid-19th century hotel that originally stood on this site was bombed during World War II. Rebuilt in the 1950s, it reopened as the Hotel Austria. Stepping inside, it
feels as if little has changed since that decade. Although the hotel is well-maintained,
everything from the patterned wallpaper and drapes to the antique-style
furnishings and old-fashioned gold plaques feels stuck in a time warp -- it can be seen as a slice of charming Old Vienna or as old-fashioned and dated, depending on one's perspective. The
mood is warm and welcoming, however, and the hotel takes an old-school approach to service, with a sense of the hotel's and Vienna's history pervading throughout.

Location

Situated in quiet, cobblestone side street in Vienna's bustling center

The hotel is
situated at the end of a quiet and cobblestone cul-de-sac in the center of Vienna, a
couple blocks south of the Danube Canal. The location is excellent for
exploring the capital, with most of the major tourist attractions within easy walking distance --Mozarthaus, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and St.
Ruprecht's Church are all  less than 10 minutes away on foot. The hotel is also in the middle
of Vienna's "Bermuda Triangle" nightlife and entertainment district, with its many
bars, clubs, and restaurants -- there's a karaoke bar right next door. The Schwedenplatz
U-Bhan stop is  a few minutes' walk, while Vienna International
Airport is a 20-minute cab ride.

Rooms

Traditionally styled rooms with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with cable channels

The hotel has 46
rooms, which include Deluxe and Economy Rooms. They are all decorated in a
traditional manner, with antique-style furnishings and patterned drapes, carpets,
and wallpaper -- though it's rare for the same pattern to repeat itself, so the look might be a bit busy for some. In-room technology includes
free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with cable channels, and radio-CD players, although not
all rooms are air-conditioned. Bathrooms are clean and modern, with
wall-mounted hairdryers but note that Economy Rooms only have showers and sinks en-suite -- toilets are in the hallway outside the rooms.

Features

Fine selection of Austrian wines and sunny second-floor terrace

The hotel serves
a free hot and cold buffet breakfast each morning in the elegantly
old-fashioned breakfast room, or it can be taken in the room for a small fee.  There is also a lounge with
small library and Internet corner, and iPads are available for guests to borrow. The hotel also rents bikes. A selection of
local wines can also be enjoyed on the second-floor terrace on warm evenings.
