Chic, upscale hotel with lots of cool places to hang out
Just inside the doors of the W San Diego Hotel is the Living Room, a lobby lounge area with trendy decor including gilded tree-stump side tables, spiky ceiling lights, and blue pin buttoned window seats set against natural-hued curtains. The space sometimes hosts fashion shows, and there’s a glass balcony holding a DJ booth. The on-site restaurant is sleek with light walls, bright orange chairs, and blue booths. During happy hour on the patio, “Paws on the Patio” takes place for guests and their pets with menu items for dogs including homemade doggie biscuits and doggie ice cream. The rooftop bar is particularly chic with palms, private cabanas, bottle service, and an artsy bonfire feature made out of stacked red chairs. The overall atmosphere is hip and stylish, drawing a lively crowd.
Within walking distance to Broadway Pier and Gaslamp Quarter
The W San Diego Hotel isn't on the most attractive block, and the immediate surroundings are mostly commercial. It's around a 10-minute walk to Little Italy and around a 15-minute walk to both Broadway Pier (where the ferry to Coronado departs) and the Gaslamp Quarter, a historical neighborhood home to nightlife and entertainment venues. The Coaster Santa Fe station, the San Diego trolley, and Museum of Contemporary Art are around a five-minute walk away. There are three beaches within a 30-minute drive including Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and La Jolla Shores, and the airport can be reached in less than 20 minutes by car or public transportation.
Modern, chic rooms with window seats, chalkboards, and sleek desks
Rooms at the hotel are light and modern with a color palette that reflects the ocean: blue accent walls, sleek white desks, and crisp white bedding. Chalkboards add a playful element to the space, while blue-cushioned window seats offer city views in some rooms. All rooms have stocked minibars and 32-inch flat-screen TVs. Bottled water, waffle spa bath robes, and generous Bliss bath amenities are provided. Keurig coffee machines are available on request and Wi-Fi is available for a fee. Bathrooms have big mirrors and white subway tiles, and either a stand-up shower, shower/tub combo, or separate shower and tub. The standard Wonderful and Spectacular Rooms (which start at 250 square feet) are on the small side for this category; standard rooms at the Andaz, in comparison, start at 315 square feet.
Small outdoor pool, modern fitness center, and trendy restaurant and bars
The W San Diego Hotel has a restaurant serving a locally sourced menu with an outdoor patio. There’s a lobby bar with a DJ and comfy lounging areas as well as a chic rooftop bar with private cabanas. The hotel has a small, heated outdoor pool and a fitness center with treadmills and elliptical machines with plasma screens, punching bags, and free weights. Thoughtful amenities in the fitness center include headsets, lemon-scented towelettes, and fresh apples. The hotel is pet-friendly, and parking is available for a fee. There is a modern business center with two computers and two printers, and 11 meeting rooms are available for private events. In-room massages are available for a fee. The hotel also participates in green initiatives in a number of ways including using water conserving fixtures and recycling. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby lounge only; there's a pesky fee for Wi-Fi in the rooms.
The 258-room W San Diego Hotel is a youthful, upscale property in Downtown San Diego, within walking distance to Broadway Pier and the Gaslamp Quarter. Modern common areas include a stylish lobby lounge, a vibrant restaurant, and a posh, happening rooftop bar. Blue-and-white rooms have chic furnishings, minibars, and cool window seats, but some are on the small side for the price. The hotel offers a (very small) heated rooftop pool surrounded by lounge chairs and a fitness center, but the fees are high for Wi-Fi and parking. The just as scene-y Andaz has bigger standard rooms and a cooler location in the Gaslamp Quarter, so it may be worth comparing rates.
