There’s good reason to visit the coasts of this Central American country -- it’s not called Costa Rica for nothing. But there’s also a draw to the the rainforest-filled interior, filled with incredible biodiversity. There’s also Arenal, a 5,358-foot-tall volcano. Though there’s always some risk involved with building a hotel near an active volcano (though Arenal has been dormant since 2010), the views are stunning, and they draw the tourists in. 1. Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa
If views are what you’re after, the Arenal Kioro is tough to top. The hotel’s developers used a laser to align each room with the volcano, so there’s not a bad view in the house. Being so close to Arenal, there are plenty of hot spring pools to soak in. Another big draw is the full-service spa, which offers beauty treatments and massages. The atmosphere is sophisticated, but unpretentious — both couples and families will feel comfortable at this hotel.
2. Royal Corin Resort and Loto Spa
With a modern atmosphere, the Royal Corin Resort and Loto Spa might not offer its guests a rustic, jungle experience like some other hotels in the area, but it still has amazing volcano views. Each of its 54 rooms overlooks Arenal, as do its thermal pools. Guests can enjoy a free breakfast buffet, and for lunch and dinner, they can dine at the hotel’s restaurant or two bars.
3. Los Lagos Hotel Spa & Resort
We mentioned hot springs pools at our first two hotels, but Los Lagos goes one step above with its aquatic amenities — it has a private lake filled with tilapia, too. That’s not to mention its zip-lines, zoo, and water slides. There’s also an observatory from which you can view Arenal. If you have kids who crave activity, you might want to stay at this 1,050-acre property, which often caters to families.
4. The Springs Resort and Spa at Arenal
This luxury hotel is the crème de la crème of the region — even Jay Z and Beyonce have stayed here. Amenities are seemingly endless: five restaurants, five bars, a wildlife sanctuary, 18 hot springs pools, a stable with horses, a rock-climbing wall, class-3 whitewater rapids, and more. Guests will have to trek pretty far through windy, hilly roads, to get out here, though there’s a helipad on site for aerial arrivals.
