Oyster Hotel Review

Electra Metropolis Hotel

Ritzy hotel with rooftop pool and eatery, near Athens' main sights

Architect Patroklos Karantinos gave this former ministerial property his all in designing the ultra-modern Electra, where a vast atrium lobby makes for grand first impressions. A sleek wall of marble squares, square-patterned wood floors, refined seating in velour blues, and brass accents combine for a sophisticated, striking effect. Famous artist Alekos Fassianos leaves a substantial footprint here on a lofty wall panel, and his take on Athens' blue skies are lightly accented by silver birds. The lobby restaurant is much of the same. Contrasting the swish decor is a remnant of the ancient Themistoclean Wall in the basement. But the real standout is the Metropolis Roof Garden's panoramic views that encompass the Acropolis, and an adjacent seasonal pool. Despite its luxury status, the atmosphere remains relaxed and guests are mostly out exploring, although it's worth returning for rooftop cocktails, where sunsets are sensational.

In the heart of Athens, near sightseeing and shopping

A three-minute walk from Syntagma Square, with its metro station two minutes farther, the hotel is smack-dab in Athens' center. Seven-minute walks to Plaka, Monastiraki, and Ermou shopping district are convenient, and designer boutiques at Kolonaki are 10 minutes farther. Busses and trains are convenient for reaching farther sights, though the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Temple of Zeus are all around 10 to 15 minutes away on foot. The area is buzzing, and trendy bars and restaurants surround the hotel. Athens International Airport is 50 minutes by car or public transport.

Top-notch rooms with smart TVs and marble bathrooms

Beautifully appointed rooms have differing decor, but all are elegant and outfitted with satin or velour fabrics, bold rugs, and abstract wall hangings. Wingback armchairs or sofas sit next to wooden beds with quilted headboards, as well as wooden dressers and desks with brass handles. Additional storage can be found in large closets. Most rooms are bright, though some face the interior and are dark. Standard Rooms start at 183 square feet (17 square meters), while upgraded rooms add more space with living areas and/or furnished balconies -- some suites have Acropolis views.

Standard amenities include phones, desks, smart TVs, and minibars, plus kettles for tea- and coffee-making, plus laptop-compatible safes and AC. Executive rooms add Nespresso coffeemakers.  Gray marble bathrooms are well-appointed with either spacious rainfall showers or shower/tub combos, as well as organic Korres toiletries, hairdryers, slippers, and robes. Note that not all upgraded rooms guarantee Acropolis vistas, although most Suites do. It's also worth mentioning that some beds are twins pushed together, though this is common for Greece.

Rooftop pool and restaurant, free breakfast, spa, and meeting facilities

Views from terraces surrounding the rooftop pool are magnificent, although the pool itself is small and seasonal. Surrounding beige loungers extend to smart wicker seating at M Bar, which offers cocktails and stunning Acropolis vistas. More of these famed views can be found at Metropolis Roof Garden restaurant, which has both indoor and outdoor seating. Self-proclaimed "creative Mediterranean" fare is served here, as is the hotel's extensive free buffet breakfast. American dishes include pancakes, waffles, bacon, and eggs, plus there are continental fare and Greek spinach pies and cakes. A healthy juice bar, tea, and coffee are also provided. Room service is available, too. The lobby bar and Library Bistro provide additional dining options, which is helpful given the rooftop eatery can book quickly.

The Aego Spa is luxe and serene with its sky-effect ceilings over an indoor pool. Also located here are a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool. Treatment rooms are available for massages, and guests can work up a sweat in the small gym, which has modern cardio and weight-training machines. Five meeting rooms with equipment hold 10 to 320 people. The hotel has no parking facilities, but parking lots are nearby. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
