Bottom Line

The mid-range Suriwongse is one of the oldest hotels in Chiang Mai, and it is showing its age, though it has undergone upgrade projects in recent years. The location right downtown and near the Night Bazaar is convenient, although this is also an area of heavy traffic that gets rather seedy at night, with girlie bars and tourist hustlers. Fueng Fah Restaurant serves an inclusive breakfast buffet, and Le Bistrot out on the corner has some decent Italian food. The rooms are average, and they don't even include free Wi-Fi, although the ones on the upper floors do have good city views. The hotel added a rooftop fitness center and pool in 2014. The Suriwongse is one of the cheaper options in this category in the heart of downtown, so it may be worth a stay for this reason alone.

Oyster Hotel Review

Mövenpick Suriwongse Hotel Chiang Mai

Scene

A busy, budget-friendly tour group mecca

The Suriwongse was Chiang Mai's first luxury hotel, but unfortunately, it has seen better days, and is slowly in the process of updating its facilities. There isn't much of a scene in the hotel, as there is not much common space. The present lobby area is crowded and chaotic, and this hotel is quite popular with the Chinese tour group crowd. Others come here seeking a cheaper hotel located right in the party central and tourist-heavy chaotic downtown. Partiers will love it here, as the hotel's corner beer bar is a prime spot for socializing and hanging out come dusk.

Location

Right near the Night Bazaar downtown, but amid plenty of traffic

One couldn't ask for a more central Chiang Mai location, right downtown and just minutes from the Night Bazaar. For city access, dining, drinking, and shopping, it is pretty ideal. However, this central location does come with plenty of traffic and the area is a tad seedy at night, with girlie bars down the road and plenty of tourist hustlers outside.

Rooms

Modern, chain-like rooms with Thai lanna influences

The rooms have modern Thai style, and they're nothing special, but just fine for the price. The Superior and Deluxe Rooms are rather small for the area, but the Executive and Family Suites provide more space. The Thai Lanna decor is pleasant enough, although it's a tad generic. Cable television basics are covered but there is no free Wi-Fi included in the price. The views from the upper floor rooms are good, either of the city or of Doi Suthep mountain, but unfortunately, these are only offered in the more expensive room categories. The bathrooms are nicer than one may expect; even the Deluxe Room we saw had a tub and separate rainfall shower.

Features

Various restaurants and a rooftop pool

The Suriwongse underwent a massive renovation project in 2014, adding a rooftop fitness center and pool. Le Bistrot restaurant does good Italian food and the adjoining Terrace Bar on the corner is great for people-watching and sitting outside. The Fueng Fah in hotel restaurant is the spot for inclusive buffet breakfasts and Sweet House provides pastries.
