Victorian house with beautiful architecture and eclectic decor that's close to popular Key West attractions
The Key West Bed and Breakfast is in an historic, three-story Victorian house located on a tree-lined, residential street in Key West's Old Town. The structure, originally the William Russell House, was built by Bahamian shipbuilders around 1898 and is now listed in the National Historic Register. With its charming porch swings and swaying hammocks, the house exudes an intimate, homey vibe with lots of local art and colorful design elements. It's the type of ambience that enourages guests to linger on the porch, stay awhile, and sip a cold drink.
The house has dark hardwood floors, exposed Dade County pine walls, and soaring ceilings. But it's the works of art and the colorful collection of yarn that steals the show in the main living room of the house. Bright, bold colors and eclectic design elements cover the furnishings and walls from top to bottom. The owner’s weaving loom sits in the corner of the room. Though the decor is vibrant, it maintains it's classy appeal.
The free breakfast is served in the kitchen each morning, and there are bicycles for rent right on the property. All the main attractions, restaurants, and boutiques on Duval Street are within walking distance.
Location
Close to all the action on Duval Street but located in a quieter part of the neighborhood
The Key West Bed and Breakfast is conveniently located four blocks from the local shops and outdoor cafes on Duval Street, but it’s far enough away that guests don’t experience the traffic or the noise that prevails on the main drag. Duval is famous for it’s quirky street festivals and parades, funky T-shirt shops, hole-in-the-wall bars with live entertainment, and excellent people-watching opportunities. Malllory Square and the nightly sunset celebration activities (street performers, local market, live music) is located seven blocks from the property, and is a must-do for anyone visiting Key West.
Rooms
Intimate, differently styled rooms with tons of character and local artistic flare
With only 10 rooms, the Key West Bed and Breakfast exudes an intimate vibe. Staying there is like being a guest in someone’s luxurious home. Each room reflects the distinct artistic style of the owner of the property. Four rooms on the second floor share two bathrooms, while others are more spacious, with private bathrooms. Some rooms on the second and third floors have private sundecks. The Blue and Yellow Rooms, located side by side, have queen size beds and whirlpool tubs, and could suit two couples traveling together. The two largest rooms are on the first floor: The King Room includes a four-poster mahogany king-size bed and Caribbean-inspired decor, including a hand-painted dresser by artist Jeff Beal. The Bates Room, also on the first floor, includes a 13-foot headborad for the two double beds in the room.
Features
Free daily breakfast and bicycle rentals on-site
While there might not be as many on-site amenities as at large hotels, that’s part of the charm. Daily free breakfast with homemade cakes, bread, and tropical fruit is served buffet-style on a blue tiled antique table in the kitchen. Breakfast ends mid-morning, so guests should get there early. There’s a hot tub in the backyard but no pool.
There isn’t a single TV in any of the rooms (although there is free Wi-Fi), and plenty of places in which to cozy up to read a good book -- either in an overstuffed chair on the porch or a shaded hammock. The hotel offers bicycle rentals on-site, which is convenient for guests who wish to explore historic Key West on two wheels.
