Bottom Line

The Sunset Beach Resort's charming chalets and tropical gardens just off a quiet stretch of private beach make this budget hotel a bargain. There are just 19 spacious, clean rooms with furnished patios, tea- and coffee-making facilities, TVs, and mini-fridges. Free Wi-Fi and safety deposit boxes are available at reception. Although there’s no restaurant on-site, there are ample restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. Additionally, the popular (and often crowded) Cenang Beach is just a five-minute walk away. This is an excellent value option, though travelers may want to compare rates with Langkawi Lagoon Resort, which has multiple restaurants, outdoor pools, and wellness facilities.

Scene

Beachfront budget hotel with charming gardens

The Sunset Beach Resort is a quaint budget pick with next-to-no amenities, aside from its excellent setting along a private beach. Its slightly removed from the hub of Cenang Beach, making it a great pick for couples or families looking to avoid the partiers and crowded tourist spots, yet still remain within easy walking distance of sites. The indoor reception area is tiny, but right outside is a charming terrace with ornately carved wooden benches and plants in large pots. Pleasant gardens are filled with sculptures, ample greenery, and wooden accent pieces. There are lots of generic budget hotels in the area, but this one stands out for its character and relaxing vibe.

Location

Quiet part of Langkawi, walking distance to beaches and shopping

Sunset Beach Resort is in a calm, relaxing part of Pentai Cenang on the island of Langkawi. It has direct access to a private stretch of beautiful white-sand beach that's a far cry from the Cenang Beach (five-minute walk away) that's often overrun with tourists. Since it sits at the end of the beach, the area is quiet and has a romantic ambience. There are plenty of duty free shops, restaurants, and nightlife within a 10-minute walk of the property, and popoular Cenang Mall is an 11-minute walk. UnderWater world, the largest aquarium in Malaysia, is an eight-minute walk from the hotel. There are lots of water sport activity centers nearby and plenty of spas within walking distance. Langkawi International Airport is 17 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Basic but clean chalets with furnished patios

As you'd expect from a budget hotel, the 19 rooms of Sunset Beach Resort are no-frills, but they're spacious and clean. They are housed in charming chalets that give a sense of privacy, and outfitted with tile floors, granite-topped wood furniture, and neutral-tone linens. Some local artwork and potted plants add a bit of charm. For seating, there are cushioned built-in couches that line the walls. There are also a small desk, mirror, and and a clothing rack with hangers. Rooms are air-conditioned and come with furnished patios -- although the patio furniture is not in the best condition -- tea- and coffee-making facilities, TVs (flat-screen or tube-style), mini-fridges, and two beach towels. TVs don't offer many channels and the reception can be poor at times. Safes are kept at reception. Large bathrooms are kept pristine, and equipped with curtain-less showers and bars of soap. There are no other toiletries or hairdryers. Also note that some past guests have complained of noise from road traffic and adjacent rooms.

Features

Lovely stretch of private beach, but little else

As a budget property, Sunset Beach Resort doesn’t offer a restaurant, swimming pool, or wellness facilities. Its crowning features is undoubtedly direct access to a private stretch of beautiful, serene beach. Being at the end of the beach, it's secluded and quiet. Loungers are set up, but some are in need of replacing. There is free parking outside the hotel and free Wi-Fi around reception.
