La Maison d'Art is a true hidden gem, located on a brownstone-lined street in Harlem. This individualized boutique has just five rooms on-site, and each one is beautifully curated -- much like the gallery space housed on the first floor of the property. An ever-changing array of paintings and sculptures line the walls, making each stay unique. The gallery itself is open to the public and also hosts art-centric events throughout the year. The rooms are sumptuously decorated, and feature kitchenettes or full kitchens. There are no other amenities on-site, nor is there an elevator, but the homey, artistic vibe and welcoming staff make this property worth seeking out.
Scene
A traditional brownstone bedecked in nontraditional art
From the outside of La Maison d'Art, guests might assume they are entering any other of Harlem's many traditional brownstones. But once they pass through the front door, they will find an artist's wonderland. No surface is left uncovered here. The walls drip with art -- paintings and sculptures are carefully curated to create a sumptuous and exciting atmosphere. The first-floor gallery features monthly exhibitions, making each stay unique. There is always something new to discover at La Maison.
Location
In Harlem, blocks from the Apollo Theater and a 10-minute walk from Columbia University
Harlem is known for its rich culture, epitomized by the famous Apollo Theater, located just blocks from La Maison d'Art. This part of the neighborhood is known for its charming brownstones and delicious restaurants -- Marcus Samuelsson’s famous Red Rooster is located two blocks away. Columbia University is a 10-minute walk, making this a convenient home base for those visiting the campus. There are plenty of stylish boutique hotels in other neighborhoods of New York City, but their prices will be higher.
Rooms
Five unique, elegantly decorated rooms
With just five rooms on-site, attention to detail is key at La Maison d'Art. Each room is individually decorated, featuring sumptuous fabrics and beautiful furnishings. No two rooms are alike. While the Victorian Room features painted purple brick walls, heavy antiques and a traditional chandelier, the Artists Loft is an open, airy space with wood-beam ceilings, a full kitchen, and a living area. The Master Suite Room has busy black-and-white patterned wallpaper, a gray, yellow, and white color scheme, and a faux fireplace.
Every room comes with a flat-screen TV and either a kitchenette or full kitchen. Wi-Fi is available for free.
Features
A gallery and a garden -- nothing else
La Maison lacks most amenities one would associate with a hotel, as well as an elevator, but it does feature two beautiful spaces that guests can take advantage of during their stay. The first-floor gallery features monthly exhibitions that are carefully curated by the owners of the hotel, as well as several guest curators. The colorful and diverse works are stunning, but approachable for art enthusiasts of any knowledge level.
The private garden opens up off of the gallery, and acts as a gallery unto itself. A tile mosaic on the back wall is stunning, and smaller pieces woven into the foliage are playful. Guests can sit outside and, in the warmer months, make use of the barbecue grill that is provided.
