Scene

A tiny, basic guesthouse that draws budget-minded travelers

Ms. Vy is known for greeting guests with a huge smile, a color-coded map of the city’s main attractions, a cup of Vietnamese coffee, and dozens of restaurant recommendations. The property is housed in a four-story building barely 10-feet wide located on what feels like the narrowest alley in Ho Chi Minh; some guests have mentioned how difficult it is to find it for the first time. The shoe-box lobby has a couple of cream-colored couches, two computers, and a flat-screen TV. Decor is basic, but the guesthouse is well-maintained and spotless.

Location

In a tiny alley in the heart of the backpacker district

The property is located in a quiet alley a few feet away from the main drag in the backpacker district. There are lots of bars, street food vendors, and restaurants in the immediate neighborhood, and most major attractions can be found within easy walking distance. Ben Thanh Market, the Fine Arts Museum, Huynh Thuc Khang street market, Notre Dame Basilica, the War Remnants Museum, and the Independence Palace are all within a 10- to 20-minute walk from the property. Xa Loi, the largest and most famous pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, is within a five-minute drive, and the airport is a 25-minute drive.

Rooms

Six small but well-equipped rooms with free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms

The hotel has only six rooms, all featuring double beds, basic furniture, and private bathrooms. Amenities are plentiful for a hotel of this type, and include free Wi-Fi, small flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning and fans, and mini-fridges. Bathrooms are tight and have wet room-style showers, but have hot water and come with basic toiletries. Sturdy wooden beds, large closets, and small bedside tables make up the furniture. A couple of rooms don’t have windows; most of the others have small windows overlooking the street or facing another room.

Features

Free Wi-Fi, a tour desk, and laundry service -- but no full breakfast

As with many other budget hotels in Ho Chi Minh, the front desk doubles as a tour desk. Here, guests can book bus tickets to other parts of Vietnam, or flights to Cambodia or other countries. The hotel offers free Vietnamese coffee, but there is no full breakfast on-site, which is rare in Ho Chi Minh. External laundry service can be requested at the front desk, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
