- 7 pools, 4 of which are heated in winter (though some guests say water is too cold)

This adults-only luxury resort offers a nice all-inclusive experience with tons of variety -- multiple dining options, several beautiful pools, a gorgeous spa, and dozens of wonderful activities. The rooms here are large and contemporary, with large modern bathrooms, Jacuzzis, and high-end amenities such as big flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and iPod docks. Some have a large rooftop terrace with a private plunge pool with ocean views. However, note that the beach is less attractive than others farther south, and that there are no attractions nearby. Still, though, compared with the nearby, comparably luxurious Beloved Hotel, the Excellence has more to offer in terms of options. It's also quieter, since it's adults-only, so couples looking for a romantic getaway might prefer this over the Beloved.

In a beachside, self-contained resort community 25 minutes north of Cancun
The Excellence Playa Mujeres is a self-contained complex right on the beach, just minutes from the wonderful Greg Normal golf course and the ferry to Isla Mujeres. There are no attractions within walking distance and the impressive Maya ruins are quite far, but Cancun is 25 minutes south, and the beach is pretty (though less impressive than those in Cancun’s Hotel Zone). Isla Contoy, the most important bird sanctuary in the Mexican Caribbean, and Isla Mujeres are a quick boat ride away.
- 35-minute drive to Cancun International Airport
- 25-minute drive to downtown Cancun
- 50-minute drive to Puerto Morelos, with quiet beaches and great snorkeling spots
- 1-hour drive to Playa del Carmen, a laid-back and bustling town with great shopping, and a well-heeled crowd
- 2-hour drive to Tulum ruins
- 2-hour, 40-minute drive to Chichen Itza ruins
