Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Quiet Upper West Side location near a few sights
  • High-design style combines industrial and Art Deco elements
  • Renowned RedFarm for dim sum and Serafina restaurant for Italian cuisine
  • Cool lobby bar Locl serves drinks and small bites
  • Outdoor terraces with sweeping views of the Hudson River, Central Park, and Midtown skyline
  • Well-curated art collection on display throughout hotel
  • Small, 24-hour fitness center on-site

Cons

  • Fee for in-room Wi-Fi access
  • A bit far from many popular tourist sights

Bottom Line

The NYLO New York City is a beautifully designed upscale hotel on the Upper West Side. Decor combines industrial-chic pieces with Art Deco details in both the public spaces and rooms. The hotel's three restaurants are each notable in their own right and there is a wonderful library off of the lobby. Outdoor terraces on the 14th and 16th floors provide sweeping views of the Hudson River, Central Park, and Midtown skyline. But the on-site fitness center is small, and there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi in the rooms (it is free in public spaces). Free Wi-Fi can be found at the similarly priced Hotel Belleclaire across the street, but rooms there aren't as stylish.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Scene

High-style hotel on the quiet Upper West Side

It’s industrial chic meets the jazz age cool at the luxurious 282-room NYLO on the Upper West Side. Think: exposed brick walls and visible air ventilation mixed with leather tufted sofas and a dimly lit, subdued atmosphere. The sophisticated library area has a chess set, two computer stations, a fireplace, and ceiling coffering that resembles puzzle pieces. The overall vibe is upscale cozy.

Rooms are bright and airy, with light wood furniture, fresh white bedding, and rich blue drapes. Most offer lovely views of the Upper West Side, and some feature balconies overlooking Broadway and the Hudson River or Central Park and the San Remo Towers. Bathrooms, in line with the industrial-chic decor scheme, feature stainless steel sinks.

On-site features similarly impress. Public terraces on the 14th and 16th floors allow guests a chance to soak in the views of the Upper West Side. Three restaurants provide delicious fare in gorgeous settings. Locl, the lobby bar, is popular with guests and locals alike. Serafina serves Italian cuisine in a bright, welcoming space, while Red Farm dishes up extremely well-regarded Chinese dim sum.

The NYLO also offers a small on-site fitness center. Note that there is a pesky fee for in-room Wi-Fi.

 Location

On quiet 78th street on the posh Upper West Side, near Central Park, the Museum of Natural History, and five subway lines

Safe, residential, and full of families, the Upper West Side is situated between Manhattan's Central Park and Riverside Park. Beautiful low-rise brownstones blend with tall, swanky apartment buildings on the numbered streets that branch off Columbus Avenue, Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway, the area's major thoroughfares. Kid-friendly museums such as the Children's Museum of Manhattan, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Hayden Planetarium make this a prime location for families looking to get away from the tourist crowds in Times Square.

 Rooms

Lovely views and attractive industrial-chic decor

Stylish rooms have bright, airy decor and industrial details. Most rooms offer lovely views of the Upper West Side, and some feature balconies overlooking either Broadway and the Hudson River or Central Park and the San Remo Towers. Rooms also feature flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. There is a fee for in-room Wi-Fi.

Bathrooms feature stainless steel sinks (in line with the industrial-chic decor scheme) and high-end Pure toiletries

 Features

Three impressive dining options

NYLO has three separate dining venues on-site, and all are impressive. Red Farm is perhaps the best well-known, and most well-regarded. Serving inventive Chinese cuisine from chef Joe Ng, Red Farm (and its sister restaurant in the West Village) is considered to be one of the best restaurants in the city for dim sum.

The chain restaurant Serafina serves Northern Italian cuisine in a bright, open setting on the first floor. Locl, the lobby bar, is popular with guests and locals alike. It serves small bites and delicious drinks, as well as a solid selection of beers.

In addition to the NYLO’s dining options, other on-site amenities include a stylish library area of the lobby, featuring a chess table, two computer stations, and a fireplace. The lobby area also features a piano near Locl.

Two terraces on the 14th and 16th floors offer views of the Hudson River, Broadway, Central Park, and the Midtown skyline.

There is also a small fitness center on-site with few machines.
