Bottom Line

Set in a former tram depot built in 1902, the 55-room Hotel De Hallen is an upscale boutique hotel that combines a mid-century modern aesthetic with a dose of industrial-chic courtesy of the cavernous interiors of this warehouse-like space. Common spaces are filled with Scandinavian furniture, modern art installations, and an abundance of fresh plants and flowers, and there are plenty of chic lounge areas to relax in, including the lobby bar and the hip Remise47 restaurant. Rooms are comfortable and stylish, though many don't get a lot of natural light as windows overlook interior corridors. Bathrooms, though modern and chic, might pose privacy issues as they have glass doors. Though a bit removed from Amsterdam's city center, this residential area is full of restaurants and cafes and the building itself is also home to the adjoining De Hallen complex, which includes a large food market, movie theater, and a library. For something of a similar nature, but more central location, travelers should consider some of the other properties from the Vondel Hotels chain, such as Hotel Roemer.

Scene

Housed in a former tram depot with a large open-plan industrial-chic lobby

The Hotel De Hallen is situated in a former tram depot and interiors are accordingly industrial-chic, with airy high ceilings and rustic details like exposed brick, steel, and poured concrete. The atmosphere of the hotel is modern and stylish, with a mid-century modern aesthetic mixed with more minimalist decor throughout the various segmented areas of the open-plan lobby that also houses the restaurant and bar. The lobby stretches through the length of the building, with rooms lining both sides, and is composed of various segmented seating areas full of Scandinavian furniture, leather couches, an abundance of fresh plants, and pops of modern art installations.

Location

Located in a residential area a bit removed from the city center, but well serviced by public transportation

The hotel is situated in a largely residential area in a quiet square that's a bit removed from Amsterdam's city center. The large building is shared with the De Hallen complex, which includes a popular food market as well as a movie theater and a library. The rest of the buildings surrounding the hotel are typical Dutch residential terraced apartment blocks. Biking locals are plentiful in the surrounding streets, which are also rife with restaurants and cafes. Though far from most tourist sights (the Museum Quarter and Anne Frank's House are about a 20-minute walk), many of these areas are easily reached by bike in five to 10 minutes or via public transportation. There are tram and bus stops around the block from the hotel and Dam Square can be accessed in about 13 minutes. The Schiphol Airport is around 40 to 50 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Stylish rooms clad in earth tones, though lacking natural light due to windows overlooking inner corridors

Rooms are stylish, but understated, cloaked in dark earth tones and teal accent walls that pair well with crisp white bedding and '50s style furniture featuring such textiles as mustard velour chairs. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, writing desks, stocked minibars, Nespresso machines, and tea-making facilities, as well as electrical outlets with international socket converters. Most rooms lack natural light as they overlook either the inner atrium or corridors. Elegant, modern bathrooms feature a taupe and dusty teal color palette and have luxurious walk-in rainfall showers (some with additional soaking tubs), though glass doors might pose privacy issues.

Features

Attractive open-plan lobby with bar and restaurant, plus meeting and event space; computer available for guests' use and free Wi-Fi

The large, post-industrial space that constitutes the open-plan lobby includes a stylish restaurant, Remise47, that's popular with locals and guests alike, as well as a hip bar that opens up onto a large brick patio with lots of seating for alfresco drinks. The restaurant serves an a la carte and buffet breakfast, though it's not included in the room rate, and room service is also available. The hotel has a well equipped meeting room as well as event space for various functions. A computer is available for guests' use in the lobby and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Bikes are available for rent directly through the hotel.
