What It's Like

Though it houses many of the city's museums, the Museum Quarter (and the adjacent Vondelpark to the north) is a largely residential neighborhood, with tree-lined streets and gorgeous 19th-century architecture.

To the south of the Canal Ring and the Old Center, the Museum Quarter is thus named because it is home to a large number of museums, the three most important and popular being the Rijksmuseum, filled with old masters' paintings, the Van Gogh Museum, with the largest collection of Van Gogh's works in the world, and the Stedelijk Museum. However, for outdoorsy ventures, many like to do as the locals do and visit the 120-acre Vondelpark, with ponds, gardens, and occasional concerts.

The Museum Quarter and Vondelpark are also good spots for shopping. Whether you are looking for upscale clothing boutiques or anitque shops, you can find it along the busy streets of Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat and Van Baerlestraat. There are also some tasty restaurants in the nieghborhood.

Where To Stay

There are numerous hotels in the Museum Quarter, including many budget-friendly options. Vondelpark also has a number of budget options, but some of the hotels in this neighborhood aren't within walking distance of the Museum Quarter's popular museums, or any other popular attractions (aside from the park itself).
