The Lakedale Resort is not your grandfather's campground. In addition to a lakefront location with picnic spots, this 82-acre property offers everything from an airstream trailer to canvas cabins. The lodge rooms definitely have the most conveniences -- bathrooms with Molton Brown toiletries, TVs (albeit tube-style ones), and patios -- but they are also the least outdoorsy. The Canvas Cabins are no-frills -- but in a good way -- sporting charming rustic decor and comfy beds. The property is best suited for visitors looking for an upscale camping experience, although poor cell phone reception may be a nuisance for some.

The Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes is slightly inland on San Juan Island. It's only about a ten-minute drive from the ferry, but the quiet environment makes it feel much farther away than that. It goes without saying that a car will be needed if you plan on exploring the island outside the resort.
Friday Harbor is a small, compact town located on the eastern side of San Juan Island. Its kid-friendly attractions and dozens of outdoor activities attract families and active travelers alike year-round. Summer months are especially popular, when you'll likely find long lines for the ferry. There's a wide array of great boutiques, quite a few solid restaurants serving international cuisine, a handful of interesting art galleries, and several unique museums.
Pretty beaches, beautiful trails, gorgeous whale-watching tours, and wild state parks make the San Juan Islands one of the best destinations in the region for the outdoorsy tourist -- but the myriad of other "city" activities available are sure to please the urban travelers too.
