We've visited THOUSANDS of hotels. So we've seen it all -- from total dives to painfully beautiful resorts; from massive, amenities-filled properties, to some spots that are just, well, downright weird. And the eight hotels that make up this list fit the final description. Take a look at the weirdest places you can spend the night below, and then tell us in the comments section -- do you think they're weird, or just plain awesome (in maybe a weird kinda way)?!
There’s obsessed and there’s OBSESSED, and if you’re a David Beckham fan who’s booking this room, then we’d say you’re the latter. Though the Mayafair Design Hotel offers several themed rooms, such as one that pays homage to Louis Vuitton and another to Versace, the David Beckham Room is definitely the weirdest. Posters of the soccer icon (and certified hottie) can be found above the bed, on the walls, and even surrounding the bathtub.
Anatolian Houses is an upscale, traditionally-styled complex with 33 suites carved from ancient stone caves. Located in the center of Göreme town, the hotel has maintained the original architecture so every room truly feels like you’re staying in a cave — albeit, an extremely luxe one. The Presidential Suite features a fireplace, deep soaking tub, and balcony with a gorgeous view of surrounding caves.
London’s Georgian House has plenty of nice, normal rooms — that are fittingly “Victorian” considering the hotel’s address– but it is also home to several rooms decked out with wizardly goodness: from a “cauldron” by the fireplace, to an owl figurine by the bed, from old-fashioned luggage under the bed, to “potions” in the bathroom. Guests who book the Harry Potter Tour Package not only get to stay in a Wizard Chamber room, but the package also includes breakfast, a Muggle Walking Tour, and a Warner Brothers Studio Tour on the making of Harry Potter.
BaanBooLoo is certainly unique in Chiang Mai. This charming and rustic guesthouse, hidden away behind a temple in the heart of the old city, is part of a family home, and the amiable owners strive to recreate the traditional Thai guesthouse feel of old, with plenty of local charm. The six rooms are simple, and several are actual tree houses, with quiet balconies equipped with hammocks and fans. Another tree house-like amenity you’ll find here? Plenty of mosquito nets…
Sure, people go on cruises all the time, but it’s not everyday you hear of someone choosing to sleep aboard a docked riverboat, complete with a giant, red, rotating paddlewheel. This “botel” is moored in the Sacramento River, in the center of Old Town, and provides excellent access to a number of historic sights, including the Railroad Museum and the Crocker Art Museum. Guests have commented that the rooms are full of charm and also comfortable, but that they can get a lot of outside noise at night.
This quirky, bed and breakfast-style hotel has 16 villas, all artistically designed around a certain theme. We think the weirdest choice may be the Wagon Wheel villa with a functioning water wheel on the entry door and a covered wagon-style bed. Unique amenities here include a bread maker with a fresh loaf for each guest upon arrival.
The Starlux is a family-friendly boutique hotel with highly stylized 1950s futuristic decor throughout, including in the “Real” Airstream Trailers that are available to book (although their bathrooms are authentic for an RV as well — meaning, not for the faint of heart). Just over a block from the beach and Wildwood Boardwalk, this 45-room property is a short walk from restaurants and shops. Highlights include a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, and game room.
Set in a beautifully refurbished former Victorian prison that retains a large portion of its original fixtures, most rooms here comprise three cells and are cozy and contemporary, though some can get stuffy. Still, they’re much more chic than they were back when they were jailing inmates in the 18th century! It’s hard to imagine that the posh surroundings once housed (and hanged) British prisoners, though period furniture and preserved dungeon-like punishment cells are scattered throughout the property.
