Bottom Line

The Melia Cozumel is a mid-range all-inclusive resort located on one of the best beaches in the North Hotel Zone and across the street from a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. It features 147 spacious rooms with furnished balconies and marble bathrooms with shower/tub combos -- but decor is a little bland, and technology could use an update in some units. There are several dining options on-site, two pools -- one of which is adults-only and has a swim-up bar -- a kids’ club, and a small spa complete with a fitness center. Its next-door neighbor, El Cozumeleño, has similar rates year-round and better snorkeling, but the Melia Cozumel has better rooms.

Oyster Hotel Review

A mid-range family-oriented all-inclusive

The Melia Cozumel is a small, mid-range hotel popular with families and low-key couples. It features all the basics of an all-inclusive, including two pools (an adults-only and a family-friendly one), several restaurants, a spa, and a fitness center. The Melia also has one of the best beaches in the North Hotel Zone, with fine white sand and turquoise waters. (Snorkelers might prefer beaches a little south of the hotel, though.)

Standard rooms are a little bland, with blonde wood furniture and outdated technology (such as tube TVs), but higher-category units have somewhat more inspired decor and better amenities, including flat-screen TVs and minibars, as well as sitting areas with a sofa beds. All rooms, however, have furnished balconies overlooking the garden or the ocean.

Some might feel the evening entertainment is a little limited, so those looking to party might want to go to San Miguel for a drink or pop by other hotels in the area.

On a sandy beach north of San Miguel and across the street from the Cozumel Country Club

The Melia Cozumel is located on a white-sand beach in the Northern Hotel Zone, a short drive from the downtown area and five minutes from Cozumel International Airport.

The Northern Hotel Zone is a strip of oceanfront hotels a few minutes north of San Miguel. There’s not much within walking distance, but restaurants, bars and stores are just a few minutes away. Cozumel Country Club, the island’s only golf course, is located just across the street.

Cozumel is Mexico’s largest inhabited island and a snorkeling lovers’ paradise. There aren’t as many cultural or historic attractions as in Riviera Maya, but there are a few minor Maya ruins worth checking out. Cozumel's main source of income and tourism comes from the dozens of cruise ships that dock here daily year-round. There are a few upscale stores on Rafael Melgar -- San Miguel’s main drag -- and dozens of varied international restaurants, but most tourists come to Cozumel for its world-class snorkeling and unspoiled eastern beaches. There are wonderful half and full day trips to gorgeous snorkeling spots, and there are many water sports available at any of the beach clubs found along Rafael Melgar.

  • 5-minute drive to Cozumel International Airport
  • 7-minute drive to the Museum of the Island of Cozumel
  • 8-minute drive to downtown San Miguel
  • 9-minute drive to the ferry terminal to Playa del Carmen
  • 17-minute drive to the cruise ship terminal
  • 18-minutes to La Ceiba, a snorkeling lovers’ paradise
  • 25-minute drive to the eastern beaches
  • 30-minute drive to San Gervasio Maya Ruins
  • 34-minute drive to El Cedral Maya ruins
  • 57-minute drive to Celarain Lighthouse, boasting impressive views

Spacious rooms with balconies and generic decor

Rooms at the Melia Cozumel are fairly spacious and bright, with floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows opening onto furnished balconies or patios with garden or ocean views. Decor is a little generic -- with blonde wood furniture, and pale yellow or light brown accent walls matching the bed throws -- and rooms are light on amenities, with only a TV (some are tube TVs) in the lower-category rooms. Suites come with a few small upgrades, including flat-screen TVs, non-plastic patio furniture, a wider range of toiletries, minibars, and a small sitting area with a sofa bed.

  • One king or two double beds
  • Furnished balconies or terraces
  • Tube TVs in lower-category rooms; flat-screen TVs in Junior Suites and up
  • Marble bathrooms with shower/tub combos and hotel-brand toiletries
  • Air-conditioning
  • Minibars (except in standard rooms)
  • Paradise Suites have whirlpools in the terrace
  • All but the Deluxe Garden View rooms have sofa beds.
  • M Experience Rooms feature pillow-top mattresses, duvets, coffeemakers, free use of the tennis courts in the afternoon, rain showerheads, in-room spa services upon request, and upgraded toiletries.

An adults-only pool with a swim-up bar, and a family-friendly one with activities for kids

  • The adults-only pool is located right off the lobby and features ocean views, a swim-up bar, and cabanas that can be reserved at front desk.
  • The family-friendly pool, located near the kids’ club and the restaurants, features activities for children, a ping-pong table, and a pool table.

A wonderful sandy beach with calm waters

One of the hotel’s best assets is its wonderful beach with fine white sand and turquoise waters. Those looking to go snorkeling might find better spots a little south of the hotel, but those who want to relax on a lounger will be hard-pressed to find a better beach in the North Hotel Zone.

Fitness Center

A bright fitness center with a wide array of machines

The hotel has a spacious and bright fitness center adjacent to the spa. It features both strength-training and cardio machines, as well as free weights and Pilates balls. There is a steam room guests can use free of charge, and the hotel provides bottled water and towels.

A small spa offering massages and salon services

The hotel’s small spa is located in a separate building adjacent to the tennis courts. It features a couple of treatment rooms and a steam room, as well as a salon area offering manicures, pedicures and facials.

Family-friendly rooms, a great kids' club, and a pool for children

The Melia Cozumel is a solid pick for families, with large rooms -- some with sofa beds -- and a great Flintstones-themed kids’ club with daily activities.

  • Family Rooms feature a king or two double beds, a sofa bed in the living area, and a minibar.
  • The Flintstones is a fun kids’ club offering daily activities indoors, by the pool, or on the beach.
  • The family-friendly pool offers daily activities, such as aqua aerobics, dance lessons, and workshops.
  • Babysitting services available for a fee
  • Room service has limited hours.

The hotel has four restaurants, but two of them are open for dinner only.

  • La Isla is the hotel’s buffet and is open for all three meals. It offers ocean views and outdoor seating.
  • Cafe Paraiso is open for a la carte dinner only and has a dress code.
  • La Iguana Snack Bar serves burgers, sandwiches and salads in a palapa with ocean views.
  • La Iguana Grill is a seasonal grill open for dinner only.

Free Wi-Fi and free non-motorized water sports are the highlights here.

  • All meals, drinks, and snacks
  • Wi-Fi (but complaints of unreliable service in the rooms)
  • Non-motorized water sports
  • Use of all fitness facilities, including the gym and the tennis courts (fee for night play except for M Experience Suite guests)
  • Daytime and evening entertainment
  • Kids’ club access for kids between the ages of four and 12
  • Valet parking

Standard hotel services, including room service and a business center

  • Room service not available during the night (charges apply)
  • Business center off the lobby
  • Car rental desk in the lobby
  • Laundry services (for a fee)
  • ATM in the business center
  • Wake-up calls
