A traditional dude ranch with resort perks, full of Western flavor and family fun

The White Stallion Ranch is all about family fun and outdoor experiences, immersing guests in the world of ranch life from the moment they enter the imposing stucco gate. A traditional dude ranch with resort amenities, the White Stallion ignores no detail, from the western saddles used as stools in the honor bar to the landscaped cactus gardens (with botanical labels), grand stone fireplaces, and Western movie posters in the theater. Leather, wood, and iron can be found throughout, and saddle blankets are used as pillows and bedspreads. Horseback riding is a major ranch activity, and guests are assigned a horse for the duration of the stay; kids especially get attached to their horses, their confidence rising as they learn to ride, rope, and saddle them. Near the stables, an Old West-style town is home to evening entertainment like line dancing and bonfires with cowboy songs, as well as stargazing and astronomy talks from the mountain-view patio. Meals are served family style in a fun, Western mess hall, and, unlike the Old West, chefs are happy to accommodate special diets. Once guests arrive, most find no reason to leave, and many return to the White Stallion year after year.

On 3,000 acres of ranchland, bordering Saguaro National Park, between Phoenix and Tucson

The White Stallion Ranch sits on 3,000 acres of Sonoran desert, between Phoenix and Tucson, in a rural area with few neighbors in sight. The ranch borders Saguaro National Park; there are frequent trail rides, hikes, and rock climbing expeditions around the region. A car is necessary to visit nearby tourist attractions, but most guests are happy to stay at the ranch for the duration of their stay. Golfers will find 13 golf courses within 30 minutes’ drive. Downtown Tucson is 30 minutes away by car. Tucson’s airport is a 35-minute drive; Phoenix airport is 90 minutes away. The ranch can arrange airport transfers upon request, and cars can be rented at the resort if necessary.

Atmospheric and rustic, with bootjacks and shoe-polish cloths for cowboys

Rooms at the White Stallion Ranch are clean and spacious standalone casitas that run the gamut from Standard Single Rooms to Deluxe Suites that sleep five to a four-bedroom Hacienda. The decor is rustic and Western-themed, with Santa Fe-style furniture, Southwestern paintings and knick-knacks, coat trees for hanging cowboy hats, tin lamps and mirrors, and natural wood accents everywhere, even in the modern, cabin-like bathrooms. Bathrooms have combination shower-tubs and all rooms have sitting areas. Amenities include private patios and Wi-Fi, but no TVs (a deliberate choice, to help guests fully connect with the ranch's Old West spirit); other offerings include pillow-top beds, iPod docks, mini-fridges, and safes. Little extras like shoe polishing cloths (riding is dusty) and bootjacks add to the authentic ranch atmosphere.

Everything you'd expect from a dude ranch -- scenic trail rides, hikes, and rock climbing expeditions -- plus a spa and a bar for after

The White Stallion Ranch is all about horses and the outdoors, with a wide variety of trail rides, including all-day trips into the canyons, as well as “wine and cheese” or “beer and cheetos” rides. There are also hayrides, team cattle penning competitions, and rodeo demonstrations. Hikes and nature walks are offered daily. Rock climbing expeditions and lessons cost extra. There are also a swimming pool, petting zoo for kids, and a spa with a redwood hot tub and sauna for adults. The game room includes pool, foosball, and air hockey tables; the outdoor sport court is used for volleyball, basketball, and paddle tennis. Other features include an outdoor pool and hot tub, a game room and a movie screening room, and a small fitness center. The dining room serves a range of Southwestern-style cuisine and snacks are available throughout the day (all food is included in rates); there's also an honor bar with a pool table where guests hang out in the evenings. A range of family-friendly evening entertainment is also held. The resort also has free Wi-Fi and a gift shop.
